Thracian Posted 27 November 2007 Posted 27 November 2007 We have to be realistic and ask how many of these kids would actually be in the team had our pre-season signings worked out and how many are really that good. We have spoken about how lousy some of the signings have been with the likes of Kishishev bombing and allowing Weso to get a run. Mattock or Sheehan wouldnt be featuring had Clarke not got injured, Stearman wouldn't have got in had Kaebi or even Chambers come through, Fulop has come in as Logan has left on loan, Matty Fryatt almost got sold to Wolves but is featuring but cant see that many goals as is playing because Cort and DJ havent excelled etc etc. I can only say hand on heart that Weso has a huge future if he stays away from injury, Mattock is highly regarded but I must admit I cant see what all the fuss is as yet although he has potential, Stearman can be a very good right-back if he concentrates more and Sheehan has a great left peg but his all-round game needs work. King hasn't played enough to warrant any major excitement although again he has potential but then again most clubs have a load of youngsters that they are excited about from Burnley to Ipswich so are we that unique?! Clarke was just a steady defensive left-back, nothing more. I can't imagine why he'd have kept Sheehan and Mattock out of our team. Kaebi was never going to come through at right back. He wouldn't be in the top four. Logan may yet return a better goalkeeper but Fulop would have replaced almost anyone. He's an exceptional goalkeeper for our division and he'll surely be in the Premiership next season. The "fuss" about Mattock is that he's 17 yet is taking to first team football soundly enough and that despite injuries and so many managerial upheavals. I did suggest to people he really needed a bit more time but our defensive record hardly suggests he's been any sort of weakness? As for "most clubs" youngsters, Leicester having six in a team is pretty exceptional. And there's another one, Gradel, who probably should be there. I did wonder like many others if the kids would have so much of a chance this season. But the truth is that all this supposedly wonderful players turned up and our youngsters saw them off. They performed well in the close season, a few were sidelined for the seasons opening games, but back they came because the managers could rely on them in the main and because they were fit for the job unlike a few I could mention. It's easy to argue in hindsight that some of our signings weren't good enough but the likes of Weso, Sheehan, King, Mattock and even Stearman have won and kept their places on merit. I've no doubt they'll compete with the next lot too yet will benefit from having a few more genuinely good quality players around them. You mentioned Campbell but I don't see why he should be criticised. He's scored four goals in 11 matches - a respectable return - and I wish we'd had him last night cos I'm pretty sure we'd have won.

Not Louis Dodds? Only joking, Thrac. I totally agree though, perfect game for a right place, right time striker like the Deej.
