Fat Ron Posted 15 April 2008 Posted 15 April 2008 With the 1990-91 Season being our lowest ever finish in League football (*Waits to be corrected*) I wondered how that season compares to our current predicament. 1990/91 22nd 46 14 8 24 60 83 -23 50 2007/08 22nd 43 11 15 17 40 42 -2 48 It comes as absolutely no surprise that our main problem this season has been Scoring goals, compared to the Class of 91 they are behind by 20 goals. We are also 3 games a drift of 91's Won games (14). On the plus side (if there really are any?) we have a far superior defensive record, some 41 better off than Pleats misfits. Looking at the stats, I still wonder how the hell we managed to stay up back then (Conceding 83 Goals and losing 24 games!!!), which makes me think our current situation and inability to score goals may finally see us suffer Relegation to League 1 (Division 2, Division 3 or whatever the Football League decide to call it next Season!!!)
Ryanside Posted 15 April 2008 Posted 15 April 2008 when the football league was created back in the day we finished bottom of the 2nd devision a few times, but got voted back in each time IIRC

Eastern Fox Posted 15 April 2008 Posted 15 April 2008 Looking at the stats for that season, we were well lucky not to go down because that year only two teams rather than three were relegated, because the size of the Premiership was expanded from 20 to 22 (it went back down to 20 later). We can't count on that luck again this season short of a match fixing scandal being uncovered at another Championship club!
Thracian Posted 15 April 2008 Posted 15 April 2008 It's not just the 11 wins but the 15 draws that has condemned us. How many times could you say we set out to win the game from the off? Charlton 1-0 up, did we carry on doing what had led us to be 1-0 up, no! Blackpool.. we played okay for a short spell second half, equalised, then tried to hold out. We didn't go for the game at Southampton, or Norwich, or Watford really. The examples are endless. We've been too cautious for years. And if we're the same next season we'll still not be successful, whatever League we're in. Attack teams hard and fast I say, then attack em again and again. You don't make teams fear you by having a fancy ground. You do it by scoring goals. Lots of them.

At the end of the day - as Peter Beardsley famously said - If you score more goals then you'll probably win!
