Uncle Albert Posted 27 April 2008 Posted 27 April 2008 You're right about the lack of support but I'd never see full-back as being a peripheral position other than physically.Good full-backs are the launchpads for attacks. Agreed. At least with Mattock he will have a run, where as yesterday Clapham played to many high balls upto Howard or he was playing backwards to the centre halfs. With Mattock you have got a Stearman who can overlap the wingers and can cross the ball in. And Clapham fails to do this.
Thracian Posted 27 April 2008 Posted 27 April 2008 :crylaugh: :crylaugh: That has to be a contender for dumbest post of the season. There's more chance of me marrying Keira Knightley (with TPH as best man) than there is of Avram Grant taking over as manager of Leicester City. If you really want me to try to swing it with TPH, just ask.
Daggers Posted 27 April 2008 Posted 27 April 2008 If you really want me to try to swing it with TPH, just ask. You must have an accommodating wife, he'd be flattered but I think TPH is strictly a ladies man.

That's one of the reasons I quite like the idea of linking him with Beswick - because the one would cover the other quite seamlessly. But Mattock definitely didn't look himself in the reserves last week and didn't get a minute of the game against Wednesday. If all is well then he's got a strange way of showing it.
TrickyTrev Posted 27 April 2008 Posted 27 April 2008 A manager that communicates to the players the way in which he wants them to play, so that they know how they are attempting to break the opposition down. Being able to organise a defence is a bare minimum for a competent football coach. It is of course important that the manager chooses the correct ay of playing and matches the way he wants to play with the player he has at his disposal. For instance there is no point in moaning that the players for playing the long ball when you have two lumps upfront and one side of the pitch totally defunct, Ian Holloway. Simiarly it is pointless playing a game of getting the ball wide and into the box when you're two front men are midgets like Hume and Fryatt, Craig Levein. The biggest red herring is talk of passion and motivational skills. Players want to win like anybody else and generally try their hardest. Players look like they are not trying when they are despondent and don't know what they are doing. I'm not saying there isn't a role for man managment, but that if your players believe in what they are doing you won't need to throw any tea cups.
TrickyTrev Posted 27 April 2008 Posted 27 April 2008 k) Players should never feel they'll be pilloried for trying things or making a mistake. It breeds fear. I agree with almost nothing you say but this is 100% correct. Players need to be encouraged to try things and to want the ball, they should only be criticised for not wanting the ball. When you have players not willing to take responsibility for being part of a constructive attack your team is dead in the water. We've got too many midfield players that don't show for the ball and even less that are willing to do something out of the ordinary with it. Little things like this are the truely important aspects of giving players confidence. "Motivation" if you will. It has bugger all to do with Churchillian speeches and showing that you care on the touchline.
