really, i had no idea you weren't english - you're way better than a lot of the english on here :giggle:

....as i said, tho, living in the country is only a true benefit if most of the locals struggle with your mother tongue, i don't have to speak norwegian so my progress has been rather slow

How many years have you lived in Norway?

True, being there does not guarantee that you'll learn, but it certainly helps a lot.

If you are "on site" and also take every opportunity to mix with the locals and use the local language, and also attend appropriate courses (or go to school, it is much easier if you are a kid of course, you can generally sound "native" if you move to a new country by your teenage years, though some people retain that ability throughout their lives), it should be possible to make huge progress. If you are motivated to learn the local language that is (not saying you are not but you may be very busy with work or other activities already)...

A Danish guy I know married an American doctor. She told me she was having trouble with "articles" (+en, +et) but generally was making good progress. She obviously needs to speak pretty good Danish with her patients. I am not sure what the Danes around her think of her Danish but I will ask at the first opportunity...

I spent 5 days in Denmark one year and was already starting to speak some sentences. And this was just listening to my two friends speaking Danish and going to the cinema and watching tv and listening to the news. I can still understand some of it but don't think anyone would understand me if I tried to speak it now.
