Anybode use Xcode on their mac?

I keep getting an internal error upon startup

*** -[NSCFString replaceCharactersInRange:withString:]: nil argument

and when I begin a new project

*** -[NSCFDictionary setObject:forKey:]: attempt to insert nil key

I haven't done ay programming for years and I'm kinda starting from scratch with C but having an infuriating time trying to resolve these issues with Xcode itself. I've followed all the advice on the apple user forums that I could find regarding this problem (trashing prefs, uninstall, reinstall, freeing up extra space on the HD that the application is on - currentlly well more than the minimum advised HD space %) yet still it persists

I know it may be a long shot but if anybody's got any advice it would be most welcome.
