Guest Posted 5 May 2009 Posted 5 May 2009 Skipper cites Yazz as influence Leicester City skipper Matt Oakley says there should be no limits to what the club can achieve in next season's Championship. The 31-year-old midfielder has delivered an upbeat assessment of City's chances of building on their League One title success, but says chairman Milan Mandaric's spending power will be crucial if the club is to make a big impact. He said: “We can take a lot into next season and the fans can look forward to it as we have a good, winning team. “The manager (Nigel Pearson) and the chairman (Mandaric) will strengthen the squad and who knows how far we can go. “They have to strengthen, because this is a young team and it is important that we bring in the right type of characters to help them. “The youngsters want to do well and there are no bad eggs in the squad, so we can move forward together.” Oakley said he was going into the summer holidays “to enjoy his time with the family” after admitting his 2008 break was “a terrible one.” The former Southampton schemer arrived at the Walkers Stadium in January last year from East Midlands rivals Derby County, who were then in the Premier League. He said: “I wasn't much fun to be around last year as I had started the (2007-08) season as a Premier player with Derby and then moved to Leicester, only to end up being relegated out of the Championship! “I didn't enjoy it one bit when we broke up for the summer last year, but in one way it has sorted out the club and relegation was perhaps a good thing to happen to us.” Oakley has also pinpointed City's magnificent away form as being one of the major factors in the title success. Their record-breaking run of wins on the road was extended to 14 with the 3-0 victory at Crewe last weekend. City have also taken more points (48) and scored more goals (43) on their travels than in any previous season and Oakley added: “On occasions, we've struggled at home to break teams down, but there have been times away from home when we have taken teams apart. “It has been tough at times, because we've had a lot of pressure put on us because the crowd at home expect us to win. “We've drawn games we should have won, but then we've always been strong away from the Walkers because we are so good on the break.”
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 5 May 2009 Posted 5 May 2009 Skipper cites Yazz as influence Hey! Come down off cloud nine. Admitedly Matt has had a great season and good on him. However next season is a new ball game, and many current players are not going to be up to it. That could include Oakley himself.
Darkzzz_ Posted 5 May 2009 Posted 5 May 2009 Or it could be the reverse and they could be well up for it after this great season. I have faith the players will take this mentality into next season. We all know it will be a different ball game but there is no point speculating on next season until we see what happens this summer.
Scow Posted 5 May 2009 Posted 5 May 2009 We already have seven players in the squad who have won promotion to the Premiership in Oakley, Howard, Brown, Clemence, Dickov, Powell and Edworthy. The latter three are unlikely to be involved playing wise, but their experience could prove useful to the younger players in the squad. I believe Tunchev, Hobbs, Dyer, Berner and Gradel are all capable of doing well in the Championship, so as long as we add to the squad in the right areas, I don't see why we can't be competing in the top 10.

Oakley will be key for us in the Championship next season... Even at 32, he's one of our strongest players... And should keep the captaincy for next season aswell imo...
Guest Posted 7 May 2009 Posted 7 May 2009 Bruno wants the playoffs Couldn't be arsed to start another thread for this, but also, the new look Bluearmy site looks alright
Basingstoke Fox Posted 7 May 2009 Posted 7 May 2009 Will we need Berner next year? And that new Blue Army website looks very good indeed!
carterfox90 Posted 7 May 2009 Posted 7 May 2009 for oakley to be a major player in the team he should spend the summer practising his corners & free kicks this season they were terrible especially for a player of his standard imo i think he will end up being a bench warmer remember he was part of the team that took us down & i remember some of the games that he disappeared in & it was too many
