davieG Posted 10 March 2010 Posted 10 March 2010 I'm about to install a 10.5kw Electric shower and it recommends a 45amp MCB. No problem so far. Unfortunately I have a Wylex Consumer Unit which takes an NSB type MCB (http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/WYNSB32.html) but Wylex don't do a 45 amp one. Does anyone know of a compatible 45 amp MCB that would fit the Wylex unit or could I fit a 40 or 50 as an alternative. I'm concerned that the 40 would trip continuously and the 50 would not provide the protection I need. Thanks in advance.
Unit Posted 10 March 2010 Posted 10 March 2010 http://www.connectstores.com/P.E.D/sp_17781-10.html second one down? or this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WYLEX-BS3871-B45-45-AMP-M3-MCB-PLUG-PUSH_W0QQitemZ120536791239QQcmdZViewItem?rvr_id=&rvr_id=&cguid=eb6a69411250a0e20261ed71fbe4b410 (don't have a clue if i'm right btw)

It depends what voltage you get in your house at 220volt 10.5kw will draw around 48 amps so 50 amp would be alright but at 230volt it will draw closer to 40 amp so i don't think you will be able to use a 40 amp also the cable size for a 10.5kw shower needs to be 10mm i will have a look thorough my order books to see if i can find a compatible 45amp breaker

I don't know what the voltage is I always thought it varied between 220 to 230 anyway. As for the cable I'm not sure whether to use 10mm or go for the 16mm. Here's the leaflet in pdf format - http://www.tritonsho...fittingbook.pdf Any advice on the MCB or the cable is welcomed.

On that tlc website there is an mk sentry 45 mcb or rcbo that will fit you should go for rcbo as showers are supposed to be fitted with an rcbo your choice tho as the price differs quite a bit
Rocky Dennis Posted 10 March 2010 Posted 10 March 2010 Id go for the 50A breaker and 10mm cable Your shower will only be drawing maximum current when on max temp/fullblast ie probably never Im a Sparky BTW Good Luck

I'm assuming it's this one, http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/MK6938.html is that still compatible? It also says the cable should exceed the RCBO rating, the 16mm cable is only 45amp rated isn't it? Surely I don't need anything greater than that.

I do have a background in electrical and electronic engineering but my training on the electrical side was 40 years ago so although I have the basics I'm not too familiar with MCBs, RCBOs etc.

Surely I don't need anything greater than that. 10mm cable will take roughly around 51 amps 16mm will be massive but thats upto you basicly with an rcbo you connect live and neutral to the breaker then the blue cable already in the breaker connects to the neutral bar and the white wire connects to the earth bar and then any fault between live neutral or earth will disconnect the rcbo quicker than a mcb and that from tlc was the one i looked at, if you hadn't gathered i'm also a sparky any more help i'll be back on tomorrow morning
jonthefox Posted 10 March 2010 Posted 10 March 2010 I can generally put my hand to anything, but im totally wank at electrics.
davieG Posted 11 March 2010 Author Posted 11 March 2010 Ok thanks for everyone's advice especially Danny & Rocky. Having, surprisingly received a reply to my email from Triton I've decided to take their advice and go for the 50amp MCB from Wylex with 10mm cable. Hopefully will be ok as I've just order both online.
