As for Dave: SIGN HIM UP, SIGN HIM UP. An incredibly powerful but very primitive device. I heard that LCFC were approached in the late '90's for funding the development of a more advanced system called 'ShotStopper' but declined on the grounds that they could lay a new pitch for the cost (around £250,000 I was told). Unlike the 'Medieval siege engine' called Dave, 'Shotstopper' looked more like a Katusha rocket launcher - mutiple apertures (nine in all arranged 3 X 3) for firing many balls in timed sequences. Balls could be fired at varying speeds (up to 120 mph) by an electronically triggered spring loaded bolt (similar in principle to the firing mechanism on a pin ball machine). Each aperture had four different firing bolts with different surface heads so the ball could be curved and dipped. The whole thing was designed to come in a kit that included a plastic playing surface and run off area where the fired balls would be fed back into a loader. I often wondered whether Tim Flowers warmed up with that or a similar device before that epic Arsenal FA Cup tie...
