davieG Posted 18 June 2010 Posted 18 June 2010 .........for the majority. Why don't these drunken imbeciles piss off and leave those genuinely interested in the football to watch it in peace and without this draconian police presence and alcohol constraints. It's the same with the domestic football. Is it any wonder that we're treated like criminals when we have these shits around. From the Merc Security around tonight's city centre screening of England's crucial World Cup match will be stepped up after crowd trouble marred last weekend's game.Police and Leicester City Council debated switching off the Humberstone Gate screen after last Saturday's opening game against the US. The game, a 1 – 1 stalemate, saw outbreaks of violence in the second half when drunken louts fought with each other and threw bottles at police officers. However, tonight's screening of the clash with Algeria – also expected to attract hundreds to the city centre – was saved after an emergency meeting yesterday between senior officers and council officials. Now Leicester City Council has agreed to erect barriers to control people entering and leaving Humberstone Gate and to employ stewards. Extra police officers will also be on duty – with the some of the cost of employing them to be borne by the council. Signs will be placed around Humberstone Gate to remind spectators they cannot drink alcohol in public. Breaching the ban can result in a £30 fine. Drinkers who refuse to co-operate can be arrested. The tougher approach will last as long as England remain in the tournament – possibly another seven games. Superintendent Ian Coulton, in charge of Leicestershire Police's World Cup operation, said: "Some people let the side down during the first match and we want them to know they can't do so again. "We had families enjoying the match but they left in the second half when they felt the atmosphere become intimidating. At one point bottles were thrown at police and there was fighting." Police and council officials have been planning their handling of the World Cup since January. They looked at the way people behaved when rugby internationals were screened on the same day as the St Patrick's Day parade. Mr Coulton said: "There were no problems on that occasion." A council spokesman said: "We had a meeting with police regarding matches on the big screen. As a result, we will be screening the England v Algeria match as planned. It will include a police presence with barriers and artificial turf for spectators to sit on, and we'll enforce the alcohol-free zone." Fans welcomed the news. Lee Naylor, 29, of Thurnby Lodge, said: "I want to watch the match in the city centre. I don't see how they could show the rest if there's more trouble. People should learn to behave." Karen Watson, 23, of Eyres Monsell, said: "If people were out of control for the first, what will they be like if England get to the knock-out stage?" Leicester is one of a handful of cities screening England's games. Some police forces, including East Midlands neighbours Derbyshire, urged councils to switch off big screens because of public order concerns. Derby city councillor Alan Grimadell said: "We received strong advice from Derbyshire Police against showing the games on the big screen in the city centre."
Fosse Boy Posted 18 June 2010 Posted 18 June 2010 Even more nuts when you take into consideration the fact they're all "supporting" the same team. Fuckwits.
CosbehFox Posted 18 June 2010 Posted 18 June 2010 Reason 147 why I stay in home to watch England most of the time.
Lillehamring Posted 18 June 2010 Posted 18 June 2010 i'm guessing part of the problem is that no one bothers to enforce the alcohol ban. to manage these sort of things, they need to section of the area and have a couple of stewards taking drinks off people as they enter, and turning away people who are too drunk - one more reason why they need a proper area for this kind of thing, like the market place.

Shame there has to be an alcohol ban but with shits like these around there's no other option.
