Then bugger off somewhere else!

Wilcox Keen For Fresh Start

Jason Wilcox has today spoken for the first time since signing a one-year contract with the club - and confirmed that he was eager to finally show the City fans what he can do.

Wilcox made the move to the Walkers Stadium from Leeds United last summer, but after figuring prominently in the early stages of the campaign he was cruelly struck down with a cruciate ligament injury in mid-October.

The injury came as a bitter blow to the former England winger, and many muted an imminent retirement from the game.

But Wilcox took heart from the fact that he had already successfully comeback from a similar setback earlier in his career, and battled his way back to fitness after just five months on the treatment table.

And the 33-year-old achieved his goal when he made an ahead of schedule reappearance in City's 3-1 victory over Millwall in April.

He said: "I'm just pleased to have been given the chance to have another crack at it. Last year was frustrating to say the least and I am now just looking forward to getting down to it.

"I didn't really get much of a chance to impress the manager after I came back from my injury, and it was always going to be difficult in the circumstances.

"But I had a few positive chats with him during the season so I suppose I always had an idea that I could possibly be offered a new deal.

"I really appreciate what the club has done for me. It was tough coming back from the injury, but I worked hard with the medical staff and I never once doubted that I would play again."

Wilcox also revealed that he would undertake some minor coaching duties during the upcoming campaign.

He added: "There is going to be a heavy workload on the coaching staff next season so there may be opportunities for me to step in and help out when required. Obviously I will be focussing all of my efforts into being a player, but I do hope to also get an insight into the coaching side of things at some point.

"It's something that I am interested in, but only time will tell as to whether I like it. It certainly appeals to me.

"I am looking forward to it, but first and foremost I have signed a contract as a player and I still feel as though I have got a lot to offer.

"I wouldn't be signing a contract if I didn't think that I would be pushing for a place in the first team. There is going to be two games a week next season, and the manager is going to need a full squad. I certainly won't be taking my foot off the gas because I might be doing a little bit of coaching.

"I want to show the supporters what I can do because last season it was taken out of my hands due to the injury.

"Everybody was saying that I was going to pack it in, but I didn't really feel as though I wanted to do that - both mentally and physically.

"After my injury it is important that I get a good pre-season under my belt. My knee is now fine and I am looking forward to getting down to some hard graft once again."

Harsh, I'm sure he's on a very low contract and might be a useful member of the squad.

Well he was utter garbage last season, so I see it as perfectly fair to be honest.

He wasn't a bad player 10 years ago.

I think the admission of his probable coaching role is very telling. His new contract seems to be a good thing - experience, coaching etc.

It worries me that he'll be heavily involved next season - He really isn't that good, and hasn't been for a number of years. He may provide some 'experienced' back up, but I don't think he'll offer us much down that left side next season.

He was crap last season before the injury - He's now another year older after another serious injury.

I can't see him playing much more than a peripheral role in terms of the first team next season. As you said his past his best and just recovered from a very serious injury. I doubt he would be Levein's first choice unless he plays superbly - He's just a needed old head.

He wasn't crap last season!!! Alright he didn't set the world on fire but he put in some pretty solid performances in an otherwise dire start to the campaign. I think peoples memories have been playing tricks on them.

An expereinced player who doesn't mind being back up in one of our weakest positions for absaloutely peanuts. I can't see why people are complaining.

Yeah, he wasn't brilliant before his injury but there wasn't many, if any, brilliant performers during Micky Adams' time in charge this season. Why can't people give him a clean slate and forget about his past achievements or failures.

Wilcox is adequate back-up for our left hand side next season! Also Levein says he wants utility players and Wilcox can play at both left back and left wing!

Posted

From that interview I would say he's been told he's basically there for back-up and coaching, not to play any big part in the season, despite what he says about wanting to play.

Posted

the only possible reasons i can think of levien renewing his contract is because of his experiance (too much of it if you ask me) and the fact he is our onl out and out left sided player!! Hopefully he wont feature much next season

Exactly.

I didn't want Levein to re-sign him for another year, and I'm not going to hide my dislike of Wilcox as a player. However, I will give him a chance as and when he plays for us next season. But I believe he is not going to be very good whether the fans give him a chance or not - and I don't like the prospect of coming on here to say 'I told you so' when he does sod all next season.

Solid performances? He contributed almost nothing down that left side. He was slow, lethargic, couldn't get past players and his crossing was generally dire. When he was played at left back, he was a liability as he's rarely played there. MA logic: He's played at left back for England once, so he must be good enough. Er, no.

Maybe your memory has been playing tricks on you.

I think people should put the whole thing into perspective.

If we were building a squad for next year on good performances from this season, we'd have a completely new squad because absolutely no one impressed over a period of time.

However, Wilcox is being demonised on the basis of his age as much as anything but as was proved with Dion and Les, some old dogs still have life in them. No one expects Wilcox to play a major part in the campaign next time round but you would hope that if he did, Levein would choose him on merit alone. Quite straight forward really, not performing=not playing.

If he isn't playing, you would hope that Levein might just have spotted something in his professional approach to the game (look how hard the bloke worked to get back from a serious injury) that might just rub off on some of the others.

Bearing in mind he played in a left side that included the boy genius Stewart and the wandering Tiatto, even Ashley Cole would have looked limited.

For me, his performance against Sheff Utd was one of the highlights of the season and for that alone he should be given the freedom of the City, a holiday for two in Majorca and two weeks free membership at a Living Well Health Club.

That's not strictly true - Wilcox has had a number of serious injury problems over the last 5 years, Dublin and Ferdinand haven't experienced that.

I admire the way he's worked his way back from yet another serious injury, but there shouldn't be any sentiment involved when offering him a new contract. Although, I don't expect that to be the case here...

I can't remember him ever taking someone on, he may have attempted it, but to the same success as the Makin shuffle.

Crap crap crap.

We must have faith in CL judgement, Like all managers. he will make mistakes when keeping or signing players but no one can doubt that if he playes crap for CL he wont play again.

If you believe that Levein has used sentiment I think you are well off the mark though if he has he should go.

Dublin has had a broken leg and a broken neck and Les' knees were that knackered he couldn't play a full 90 minutes.

As for Dublin and Ferdinand - What they have incurred injury wise isn't really a patch on Wilcox.

Never said it was suggested that it was the sole reason but any hint of sentiment is completely wrong.

Furthermore, a quick poll in the Hullfox household says that people would much rather suffer cruciate knee damage twice as opposed to breaking their neck ever.

FFS here go criticising our own again, ok Wilcox will never be a LCFC legend but as others have stated there were a number of players who under Adams were nothing short of sh1te, but under CL showed considerable improvement, whilst Wilcox isnt the type of player to go past 2 men, he is a decent crosser of a ball something we have been lacking over the last couple of seasons. Also he has shown a great deal of guts, determination and desire to return from such an injury.

Lets give the guy a chance, if he doesnt perform then fine slate him, but lets not have a go at him before he has had an opportunity. Remember how bad Dublin was under Adams. Let CL work with Wilcox and then judge him.

Including sub appearances, Dublin 214, Wilcox 141. Why?
