The Football League have secured a new broadcasting agreement with Sky Sports.

Sky Sports has been awarded the exclusive live rights to the League's competitions until the summer of 2009.

The three-year agreement for seasons 2006/07, 2007/08 and 2008/09 provides increased revenue for clubs and more live matches on Sky Sports for supporters, including: 70 exclusively live matches from The Football League, including 55 from The Championship, the end-of-season play-off matches, including all three play-off finals, 15 live ties from the Carling Cup and the LDV Vans Trophy final.

This new agreement will see Sky Sports broadcast around 100 live matches per season from The Football League's competitions and extends a partnership first established in 1995.

In announcing the new agreement, Football League chairman Sir Brian Mawhinney said: "This tremendous news caps what has been an enormously encouraging season for The Football League.

"Crowds have increased yet again, as have viewing figures and we are also delivering on the promise we made to increase our clubs' commercial revenues.

"Sky Sports are a class act and this new agreement is recognition of the outstanding entertainment our clubs provide their viewers week-in, week-out throughout the season."

Vic Wakeling, managing director of Sky Sports, said: "The Football League continues to go from strength to strength and attendances are at their highest in 45 years - reflecting the huge interest in the game at all levels and emphasising the League's importance in the sporting fabric of this country.

"In Sky's comparatively brief history, we have covered every one of the 72 Football League clubs live, home or away, in cup or league. We look forward to continuing this in-depth coverage over the next four years.

"We think this deal is good for football and good for Sky Sports subscribers."

In addition to the new TV deal with Sky Sports, The Football League have also extended its TV highlights agreement with ITV Sport until the summer of 2009.

Bring back The Big Match, Saint and Greavsie and the Canon League - all on glorious ITV.

With Elton Welsby and Matthew Lorenzo.

And Big Ron.

Was awesome them days a team from the midlands on every sunday on ITV. Greavsie always used to like Birmingham and would slag Leicester off all the time. Can remember we always used to sing "Are you watching jimmy greaves?" was awesome singing it at Wembley after we had just beaten Derby in the play offs.

Name the time and place and I'll be there ;)

I don't like this news about Sky - they already have enough football and enough influence without having to establish a complete monopoly situation. They are ruining the game when making the decision to switch games to Friday or Monday nights and have far too much power for their own good.

Ah but money talks and they are not ruining the game in the same way as the failed ITV Digital deal did.

Great, more chances to move games to stupid times and days.
