Madrid_Fox's guide to surviving the summer

2 Weeks after the Ipswich game and I was bored. Not just bored but the kind of bored where gardening seems like a viable option. My lawn is fit for Barcelona to play on it at the moment!

This is why I created a guide to getting through until the Real Madrid friendly on July 31st.

1) Become a book worm.

One way I find it easier to see it thorugh the summer is that I read a lot of football related books. Autobiographies are always good, and in many ways it helps you get your fix. However, currently I am reading a book called "The Italian Job" by Gianluca Vialli. Its an incredibly good book. Its not an autobiography at all. What Vialli has done is to make a 400 page book analysing the differences and similarities between English and Italian football. It spans many topics including, youth development, professionalism, managers, referees, media, agents and the fans. Its a cracking read for the beach if you can get hold of a copy.

2) Its not football, but it will do for now...

Over the summer we have a few good things to look forward to. Formula 1 is my first choice over the summer, but the time between races is almost unbearable. Tennis and Wimbledon is always a good option. Two weeks of none stop games, excitement as Murray progresses towards the latter stages of the tournament only for the Brit to be punished by Nadal or Federer in the quarter or semi final.

3) Who ate all the pies?

Now is the best time of the year to grab your old boots and head into the park and drop some weight tubby! Playing football is always better than watching and think of the benefits of some cardiovascular exercise. Lessening the risks of heart attacks and strokes can only be a good thing, right? You also have a decent chance of getting to the beach this summer looking like David Beckham and not like Pavorotti!

4) and Action!

Film is a great way to get a football fix, The Damned United, Escape to Victory, When Saturday Comes all films that will act as a nicotine patch to soothe your football related cravings. Its not the same granted.

5) If none of this works for you, just remeber, away kit still to be revealed, transfers still to come, fixture list a few weeks away to plan your seaside break to Brighton or Blackpool.

Anyway, if you made it this far well done. Any comments?

The simpler thing to do would just be watch cricket.

Great sport for when the footy isn't on. Or use the tinternet to find footage of brazilian, argentine, swedish etc. leagues - they run during the summer months.

Or watch proper football - Gaelic - and hurling.

ESPN sacked the GAA off when they bought Setanta. Just as I was beginning to learn the rules an' all.

Sorry mate, don't have sky so Cricket is a non starter for me. Loved the days when test matches were on Channel 4!

Cricket is the summer sport.

Though I'm not happy with the fact that it's a 20-over knockabout or a game that can end in a draw after five days.
