davieG Posted 13 June 2005 Posted 13 June 2005 Now I don't like the way Sheepshank masterminded their admin after slagging us off but I do agree with him about the third placed team. Ipswich Town supremo David Sheepshanks has called for a change to the play-off system. Town have lost in the play-offs for the second year running, this time after finishing third and 12 points clear of West Ham - who eventually won promotion. Sheepshanks, a Football Association board member and somebody who carries some sway in English football, now thinks there should be some changes made to the current system. "If I put any proposal forward, I could be accused of whingeing but I will try and curry favour on some form of reward for the third placed team," the Town chairman told the club's website. "Crystal Palace made two proposals regarding the play-offs a few years ago, one saw third place benefiting from a new system but it received little support. "I think there is a strong argument though for a system that sees the third placed team going straight through to the final, with all the rewards that brings and a combination of games involving fourth, fifth and sixth to decide the other finalist." source
Guest Posted 13 June 2005 Posted 13 June 2005 It does seem to me like sour grapes. Having said that, I don't like the play-off's, and would rather 3rd place went up automatically. I know we've benefitted from the play-off's, but it's not good for my health!!
Anish Posted 13 June 2005 Posted 13 June 2005 Sour grapes indeed. What if his team finishes 7th next season on the last day? I'm sure he'll change his tune. The playoffs rock B)
C-man Posted 13 June 2005 Posted 13 June 2005 Why not have a system like this if he's so upset: 3rd place goes straight to the Play-off Final. Game 1: 4th vs 7th Game 2: 5th vs 6th Play-off Final: Winner 1st Final vs 3rd place Just an idea B)

Game 1: 4th vs 7th Game 2: 5th vs 6th Winner Game 1 Vs Winner Game 2 Play-off Final: Winner 1st Final vs 3rd place Not too sure everyone would welcome the extra game, although the alternative of; 3rd place goes straight to the Play-off Final. 4th v's 5th Play-off Final: Winner 1st Final vs 3rd place Means one game less and a smaller playoff pool of just 3 clubs. I strongly believe that the 3rd place team should reap the benefits of a playoff final for finishing 3rd and as compensation of just missing the auto spot. It doesn't bother me too much that the 4th, 5th or 6th placed team gets promoted that's all part of the lottery that is the play offs, but I do care that the 4th, 5th or 6th placed teams get all the money that derives from the play off final and the 3rd placed team can end up with nothing. It's certainly not sour grapes on my part because we never finished 3rd with all our play offs.
TrickyTrev Posted 13 June 2005 Posted 13 June 2005 I don't see coming 3rd as any great achievement. It still represents failure and those who come 3rd should feel greatful they are given a chance to gain promotion though the play off system.

Before then, any team would have taken 3rd spot, except 1st and 2nd of course!
