BlueSi13 Posted 8 September 2012 Posted 8 September 2012 So you think a printing error trumps having always worn the same colours for 140 years? We've been wearing white and navy blue since the first England kit in 1872. I really don't think it matters why. The Union Jack is a much better design than the St. Georges cross, anyway. I can't see why we should change the kit now. Daft?! Why? National teams' kits do not have to be the same colours as their flag. Some of the most famous ones are nothing like the flags of those countries. To me, a football team wearing white shirts with red just doesn't look like the England team. The England kit is actually a lot more English than St. George himself. If you think it's ok to change the colours of the kit, why not change the flag instead? Eh? The Union Flag is the flag of Great Britain, NOT England, who cares if it looks prettier? The flag of England is nearly 1000 years old, i don't think changing it is going to be an option. Generally though my gripe is more about England having to somehow represent Britishness more than Englishness. The donning of British blue and singing the BRITISH national anthem rather than an anthem of England kind of sums it up in terms of the English national team.
Guest parky0607 Posted 9 September 2012 Posted 9 September 2012 at least we can finally get rid of the 'retro' style kits. It was a nice idea by umbro for the first one (2009) but since then it's just got boring and they seem to change a slight thing, or even the colour of the badge and they can keep charging £40 everytime.

Well, as you've already said, it's clear we're never going to agree about this. I am with you on the national anthem, though. I do think England's national anthem should be different from the British one, and since God Save the Queen has had a verse with an anti-Scottish sentiment in the past, I wouldn't want to have to sing it if I was a Scot. Having said that, I'm an atheist who disagrees with the whole concept of sovereignty, so I'm not thrilled about having GSTQ as the national anthem, anyway. However, I really don't think anyone would think "Britain" before "England" when looking at the white and navy blue England kit or the Three Lions badge. Obviously, I'm aware that the Union Jack is Great Britain's flag, and not just England's. I was just saying that it's more aesthetically pleasing than St. George's cross (St. George was a Roman soldier from Syria Palaestina - very English!). It sounds like you're mainly arguing in favour of tradition, but at the same time, you'd happily change something that's nearly a century and a half old and has been the same for that whole time. Whether you value tradition or aesthetics over the other, I think the proper white and navy blue England kit wins either way.
