Small clubs success becomes failure?

Recommended Posts

Just had a thought..

..when small clubs become successful for a period of time, a long time of insecurity ahead of them lies in wait..

for example look at Ipswich, finished 5th one season, relegated the next and since has lingered in division 1..

Leicester, won 2 League Cups, were top of the premier league for a while then got relegated and now back to its Yo-Yo roots..

Blackburn won the Premier league then got relegated 4 seasons later and now have just found their feat..

This has happened to the Saints, reaching an fa cup final, finishing higher in the league than usual, yet found themselves to be relegated last season

the question is.. Is there a price to pay for small success??

I think it boils down to how management handles the success and how the directors run the club.

At Leicester the chairman and BOD got too happy and let Taylor spend all the money. Im not sure about the other clubs but notice that the likes of Blackburn and Ipswich all played in Europe the season they struggled. This then takes the focus off the league for a few weeks. This then has a knock on effect as the fans get dismayed that they are not meeting their expectations and then the side then starts to lose hope etc. it is up to the management and coaching staff to combat the complacancy in the league and maintain the performance from the previous season.

Look at Newcastle, their ambition for the UEFA cup cost them in the league. It happened to Everton a couple seasons ago when they played really well 1 season in the league but the expectation took a toll and they struggled the season after.

In answer to: Is there a price to pay for small success? IMO, i think no because if the club is managed properly then they should build on succes. To be succesful you have to start somewhere and maybe winning the league cup is the start. Therefore, the club should build on the success and look to maintianing the form in the next few seasons.

Ipswich's problem the year we were rlegated was that we concentrated on Europe to much and made a couple of signings that didn't reprasent value for money (rumours have it that we are still paying off on of these players) we havn't been able to bounce back because we lost all our better players because of our administration period. finacially were not looking to healthy out of 2 sales Bent (2.5 million) and Davies (1.25 million 25% of which went to MK Dons) we have made 1 money signing parking (450k) the rest of the money has been to pay of debts and money for Loans in the season.
