Guesty Posted 16 March 2013 Posted 16 March 2013 Must have been a very brave young man. Only 10 earned since the end of the World War II. http://www.thesun.co...s-Ashworth.html http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-21810581 For anyone who's never heard of the Victoria Cross along with the George Cross (civillian counterpart) they are the two highest accolades in the country - even higher than Knighthoods. What makes the Victoria Cross so hard to win is it's said: 1: The brave act the person performs has to have around a 90% chance of death - so whatever they do they have to know they are more than likely going to sacrifice themselves. 2: It has to change the tide of the battle. For anyone who looks up to footballers or celebrities and calls them heroes, they really should read some Victoria Cross citations/stories to put it in perspective. Or George Cross' for that matter - it's quite humbling.
johnny the fox Posted 16 March 2013 Posted 16 March 2013 Not much use to him though is it? Lions led by donkeys..
Reynard Bleu Posted 19 March 2013 Posted 19 March 2013 There have been thousands of selfless acts of bravery during the Afghan campaign (and many other campaigns). Citations and medals are rationed so many go unacknowledged. Having said that, this guy deserves his recognition and no it won't help him but then again he didnt think about that at thetime.
