Football fans told to leave bags at home

FOOTBALL fans are being urged not to take bags to Sheffield soccer matches this season to help avoid any security alerts.

The message from South Yorkshire Police comes in the wake of the London bombings, which have sparked a series of security alerts across the country.

In Sheffield there have been alerts in the Peace Gardens and Ponds Forge sports centre because of suspect packages.

And last week the bomb squad was called in to carry out a controlled explosion when a package was found near a grit bin on a side road off Queen Street.

Superintendent Martin Hemingway, responsible for policing football and other major events across Sheffield, has called for fans to remain vigilant at games and said if bags needed to be taken into grounds they must never be left unattended.

Sheffield United security staff have announced that all bags will be thoroughly searched before being allowed into Bramall Lane.

Supt Hemingway said: "Now more than ever we need fans to actively support us by being alert and following some common sense guidelines.

"Keeping personal property with you and not getting involved in behaviour that could cause a security alert are two obvious examples, but it is most important to listen to all official announcements and follow the instructions of police and stewards promptly and calmly. The vast majority of fans want to enjoy games in safety and it is our job to strive to do everything possible to make each game a safe and enjoyable experience for them."

Sheffield United safety officer Steve Hicks, said: "We will ask fans to avoid bringing bags with them to games, and if bags are needed, to fully co-operate with searches by stewards."
