It's his pitching inflexion or cadence in his early to mid work that people who don't like him tend to mock the most, I find.

 

The "oooOO, moOOOmaa, can this reEEEAaly beeEEEeee the eeeEEEeend, to be stuuuuUUUUUck insiiiIIIIIIiiiiide of moooOOOOOooobile...." etc.

 

 

Personally love it but I do understand the criticism.

On my first trip to New York, I spent an inordinate amout of time looking for the clam bar in little Italy that is mentioned in the song Joey from the album Desire. I was delighted when we found it, the Mrs not so much

 

I also sang along pretty much every word the whole way from Heathrow to Aberdeen in the late 80's. It  was something like a 10 hour trip. Rather unsurprisingly, that didn't go down too well either.
