Stoke missing Huth?

Is there any chance Stoke can recall him?

STOKE Cityicon1.png chairman Peter Coates says he can understand why supporters are questioning the decision to release Robert Huth on loan to Leicester City for the rest of the season.

But he also understands the footballing reasons for allowing the injury-hit defender to move during the January transfer window.

The decision is firmly under the spotlight as boss Mark Hughes wrestles with the loss of injured central defenders Ryan Shawcross, Marc Wilson and now Marc Muniesa.

And the loss of four goals in successive games against Manchester City and Blackburn during the past week has left many more asking about Huth's whereabouts. The chairman, below, said: "Yes, I can understand why supportersicon1.png would be asking why did you let him go, but equally I can understand the management team's reasons for doing so.

"They wanted to give him games after his long-term knee injury and it was felt reserve games weren't suitable.

"We had also brought in Philipp Wollscheid to add to the centre-halves we had here.

"The timing was then very unfortunate with the injuries that followed the decision to let Robert go.

"Ryan has got a wonderful appearance record, for instance, but then came that bad run of injuries which included him, Marc Wilson and now Marc Muniesa."

He sympathises with Wollscheid after seeing the 25 year-old German withstand a torrid time while team-mates have been dropping all around him.

"I think he's been doing very well," he asserted. "He had a tough first game at Arsenal, but didn't do any worse than anyone else and that was a tremendous Arsenal team that would have given anyone a tough game.

"Since then he's done well. On Saturday at Blackburn we just didn't defend well, but everybody has to defend, not just the back four."

Defeat at Blackburn cost Stokeicon1.png a potential £3m in prize money alone, but there now remains several more millions up for grabs as they jostle over league places in the Premier League.

"It was the biggest disappointment of the seasonicon1.png for me," Coates continued, "simply because it was an opportunity to reach the last eight.

"But I always felt it was a tough match and nobody is immune from these things. How did Chelsea lose from two goals in front against Bradford? It's part of sport and part of football.

"We've got important things still to play for, though, and we certainly want to finish as high as we can."

Stoke go to Aston Villaicon1.png on Saturday for what will be Tim Sherwood's first game in charge since replacing Paul Lambert as manager.

"The appointment of a new manager doesn't mean they have won the game already," the chairman reasoned.

"The idea that the world is suddenly transformed after bringing in a new manager doesn't ring true.

"I think it's about 50-50 statistically over whether you win or lose that first match. I remember going to Crystal Palace some years ago and people fearing the worst because Neil Warnock had just been appointed, but we came away with all three points."

Hope that this "transfer" means that Stoke drop down into the relegation spots and we survive leading to us signing Huth up permo in the off-season - but it won't.
