Council wants to double number of cyclists in Leicester by 2018

It wouldn't be so bad if everything wasn't so half-assed.

If you go to into Europe (especially Amsterdam) there are dedicated cycle lanes.  Just cycles - not shared with pedestrians, taxis or buses.  Cycle lanes here don't seem any safer or beneficial in any way to normal roads.  You'll get 500 yards of cycle path, then it ends.  Another 500 yards of normal road & the cycle path starts again.  Even if you're on the cycle path, no doubt you'll have a bus trying to push you along or push you off.  I've used the Great Central Way on many occasions & there's pedestrians & dogs everywhere who will suddenly change direction just as you're trying to pass.  It's actually easier to use a regular road & not bother with the cycle paths.

I don't really know what changes they have been making to Welford Road & the Newarke areas of town, but I do know that they will be half-assed.  Unless they provide something that is adequately fit for purpose they are never going to achieve the numbers they expect.
