Mickey O'Neil Posted 19 January 2008 Posted 19 January 2008 I'm off to Belfast on Friday (really looking forward to this!), anyone got any suggestions of where to visit? I'm obviously going on the 'Bombs & Bullets' tour. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. I'm hiring a car so I don't mind travelling. I went to The Giants Causeway last year btw, just in case someone suggests that.
Durnerz Posted 19 January 2008 Posted 19 January 2008 Belfast was rubbish when I went. The big shopping centre however is worth a look, have a look at the most bombed hotel in europe, the parliament buildings and local pubs. Otherwise theres not a great deal else. I've also been to the Giants Causeway, not bad.
Thracian Posted 19 January 2008 Posted 19 January 2008 My son's wife comes from Belfast and her family are still there but I can't access insider information cos she's away skiing. There a Titanic exhibition on the Langan River, the Titanic having been built in the Harland and Wolff shipyards and lots of chintzy nightspots in Belfast but be careful to ask and take advice on the most suitable. Belfast is portrayed as one of the safest places in Europe but you don't want to be in the wrong places. In and out of town there's stacks of attractions of different kinds to visit on the tourist run (easily accessed on the net) but it's lovely out of town around Portaferry and if you travel up the coast there you'll find fishing and yachting hamlets with lovely places to eat and take on liquid refreshment. If you've time and if the weather is calm enough you might get chance of a boat trip to the Corryvreckan whirlpool between Scarba and Jura. If there's nothing official going down and you fancy it, just talk to some of the locals. It's best to talk in pints of cold Guinness. Still don't know if they'll head out there this time of year but they are receptive to ideas when they've had a few. SuffolkFox might give you some more ideas if he's online.
Mickey O'Neil Posted 20 January 2008 Author Posted 20 January 2008 Thanks for the input fellas
Suffolk_fox Posted 20 January 2008 Posted 20 January 2008 SuffolkFox might give you some more ideas if he's online. Your memory amazes me Thracian. You should be safe enough - most of the dodgy places are actually housing estates, and you probably wouldn't be visiting them in any case. Where are you staying? I can recommend a few places. Oh the most bombed hotel in Europe is the Europa hotel - apparently on one occasion a suspect package was noticed, and the porter simply picked it up and took it outside into the street. The terrorist who placed it saw this and took it back in. Real keystone cops stuff! Many ace places to drink, including the Bot (The Botanical), the Globe and Benedicts who have an excellent 'Beat the clock' menu - The time you order is the price you pay ie at 6.30 you pay £6.30 You can actually see some places in your hire car - go up the Falls Road or Shankhill Road - you should be perfectly ok as they are very busy streets. The murals are very good, though the republican ones are the most artistic. Just don't pop into the pubs for a pint, esp on the Falls road (mainly catholic). At the bottom of the Falls Road are the Divis Flats - the army used to have an observation post on the roof!! As Thracian has said, there are lots of references to the Titanic including some poignant murals. I saw a George Best memorial mural just a few days after his death - these people don't hang about!! I guess you have sorted out accomodation but if not, PM me and I will give some pointers of where and where not to stay! Enjoy!
Mickey O'Neil Posted 21 January 2008 Author Posted 21 January 2008 Tanks again fellas! Might post a few piccies on here when I get back.
