I think the teams pre 2004ish you felt something for. Bizarrely for all of the social media and PR training, footballers are so far detached from your everyday person, people can’t connect with them. Even when we lost to the Ronaldinho goal, we always looked like we could beat any team in the world. We were exciting to watch and had ability. Southgate’s pragmatic, boring approach and to a degree lucky draws in tournaments have shown him to be better than what he’s done.
