  1. Not a picture or video but interesting Sheffield Home of Football · Join Suggested for you · Steve Wood · · WHERE DOES HEADING COME FROM? Whatever your views are regarding heading a ball, heading is a skill that has been part of the game since it’s very earliest days. Football rules originally had a fair catch rule which allowed players to catch the ball in the air then place it and take a free kick. As handling the ball was erased fully from the game during the late 1860’s & into the very early 1870’s, players faced with a ball in the air coming at them started to play the ball more with their heads. Eventually the skill developed to passing with the head and then scoring headed goals. All legal of course. The very first accounts of heading we have in football come from a Sheffield vs Derby game in January 1871. The report stated - ‘….and catching being disallowed, the players naturally " headed.' A year later during a London vs Sheffield match at The Oval, the reporter noted the following: ‘The first to show conspicuously was G. H. Sampson who played the ball with his head, which caused some amusement. This was the kind of play which the Sheffield team often indulged during the contest, the Londoners preferring to use the foot’. Other reports of the same game mention - 'ingenious method of heading' & 'Sampson headed the ball judiciously. This style of play was evidently new to the Cockneys and caused a hearty laugh.' The first headed passing attempt comes from a November 1872 Derby vs Sheffield match - ‘In a few moments after-wards Sampson made a good attempt to head the ball through’ Heading seems to have crept into the Scottish game in late 1872 since there are accounts of heading during the first formal international between Scotland & England by the Scott’s. Scottish players may have started to head the ball separately to its development in Sheffield but there are nearly 2 years between Sheffield’s first report of heading and the first international. People could move around on trains between Sheffield & Glasgow, so I am going to leave it to the reader to decide if the Scott’s copied Sheffield footballers or not. We may never know. Finally, our earliest account of a headed goal was T Heeley for Perseverance vs Oxford at the Ecclesall Road ground in 1873. Heading, yet another Sheffield football invention.
  2. Nothing shocking about that, there's plenty of 'average' footballers proving to be better at managing at the top levels of the game more so than 'elite' player i'd say.
  3. https://sportwitness.co.uk/positive-player-insists-newcastle-leicester-spells-great-career-takes-unusual-twist/ “Very, very positive” – Player insists Newcastle and Leicester spells were great as career takes unusual twist By Sean Lunt -14th June 2024 SHARE Real Betis striker Ayoze Perez has insisted he sees his time at Newcastle United and Leicester City as a success, even though it took leaving to get into the Spain squad. The striker has been talking to IDEAL ahead of Euro 2024, in which he is the surprise inclusion in Luis de la Fuente’s Spain squad. The 30-year-old has just enjoyed a solid season with Real Betis, bagging nine goals and one assists in 31 games in La Liga and two goals and one assist in six games in the Europa League. That’s seen him earn a surprise call-up to the Spain squad for Euro 2024 in Germany, with him recently bagging a goal on his debut in the 1-0 win over Andorra. His rise to the national team marks something of a late blook for the striker, who had never been in contention for Spain when playing in England. He managed 48 goals and 17 assists for Newcastle in 195 appearances and 15 goals and 12 assists in 114 games for Leicester City during spells with them both, but it is his 15 goals and 12 assists in 59 games for Betis that have seen him finally convince a Spain manager of his qualities. Some might say, then, he had wasted his career playing in England, but he is not of that mindset in the slightest. “It’s true, I assume it’s not normal,” he said. “At a young age, 19 years old, I was already packing my bags, for England, for a project and for a radical change in my life. It’s not normal either. I had a career in the Premier, about nine years, five in Newcastle, three and a half in Leicester. “A normal trajectory, very, very good, very positive years, I grew as a person, as a footballer, after so much time I returned to Spain and in a year and a half at Betis things have gone very well, months of football improvement, happiness and of many other things. And in the end, after many years of work, things arrive. The reward of playing in a European Championship.”

  9. Bittersweet night for Ireland debutant Cannon Updated / Tuesday, 11 Jun 2024 23:00 A night to forget for the team perhaps, but a memorable occasion on the western coast of Portugal for Tom Cannon who nearly claimed a goal on his international debut. That opportunity shortly after the hour mark was a rare foray into enemy territory as the Republic of Ireland were well and truly outclassed 3-0 by their Euro 2024-bound hosts, with Ronaldo bagging a brace and his team coughing up numerous chances to add to their tally. The English-born forward, who scored twice in 13 appearances as Leicester City secured promotion to the Premier League this season, represented the Boys in Green at Under-21 level but had previously been described as taking "time to reflect" on his international future. Interim manager John O'Shea however kept the line of communication open with the forward, calling him into the squad last month and handing him is debut shortly after Ronaldo had put the hosts 2-0 up in the 49th minute. "A very proud day for me and my family," he told RTÉ Sport after the game. "It’s a tough one to take, a defeat, but Portugal are a good side with top-quality players. "They are probably one of the favourites for the Euros." Cannon came as close as any Irish player to finding the back of the Portuguese net when a long ball lifted over the top saw him get the better of Danilo, cutting inside the defender before his sliding shot hit the side-netting.

During the winter months the swimming pools were drained and solid floors laid over them so that they could be used for a variety of winter activities, such as wrestling and dances. 16. The history of Rossendale Group · Join Suggested for you · George Grimshaw · · Sixty years ago today, on 5th June 1964, the Imperial Ballroom stage was graced by perhaps the greatest female singing star from these shores. Dusty Springfield was born Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O’Brien in West Hampstead, London, on 16th April 1939. She was brought up in High Wycombe until the 1950’s, then moved back to London, to Ealing. With her brother Tom, she sang in folk clubs and together they worked the holiday camps. In 1958, she responded to an ad to join a girl group, The Lana Sisters, and she adopted the stage name, Shann Lana. In this group, she developed the close harmony skills evident in her next chapter with the Springields. Comprising Brother Tom (who subsequently changed his name to Tom Springfield), and Reshad Feild, who was quickly replaced by Mike Hurst (Tim Springfield). It was at this juncture that Mary O’Brien became Dusty Springfield. It is said that the group name came into being after they rehearsed in a Somerset field one springtime. During a trip to America to record folk songs, Dusty was influenced by the Exciters who had a hit record at the time, “Tell Him”. This swayed her away from folk towards more r’n’b flavoured material. After some not-inconsiderable success with the Springfields, Dusty left the group to pursue her solo career. This was in late 1963. It was a solo career that would span four decades. With dozens of albums as well as successful singles to her name, it is no wonder that Dusty Springfield’s music is played repeatedly on TV and radio to this day. Singles charted throughout the sixties, and whilst her popularity waned in the seventies, she rediscovered herself with her collaborations with the Pet Shop Boys Her titles live on and, with her unmistakable voice, she is instantly recognised whenever the jocks play her records. “I Only Want to Be With You” reached No 4 in 1963, “I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself” charted at No 3 in 1964, whilst in 1966, she finally reached top spot with “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me”. “I Close My Eyes and Count To Ten” was the next Top 10 entry, at No 4 in 1968. She had to wait until 1987 for her next foray into the Top 10, when her previously mention collaboration with the Pet Shop Boys reached No 2. Much has been written about her sexuality, but I don’t intend to go into that here. You can read for yourselves if that intrigues you. In 1995, whilst recording a live album, Dusty began feeling unwell and her doctors in the UK diagnosed breast cancer. After months of chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment, the cancer was said to be in remission, but by 1996, the cancer had returned. Despite further treatment, she died on 2nd March 1999, aged just 59. Just weeks after her death, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

People are being urged to book their place on a nostalgia-filled day and get on board with some brilliant bits of steam train history. The rallying call comes from the Great Central Railway (GCR) which is hosting an inclusive event this Father’s Day (Sunday, June 16). Available to fathers of all ages, the heritage railway is offering travel on its trains for just £1 when accompanied by a paying child - whether young or old. The ‘Dads for a Quid’ event means all father figures can explore the GCR’s vintage steam trains and enjoy a scenic ride through Leicestershire before stopping off at one of their cafes or tearooms. Malcolm Holmes, GCR general manager, said: “What better way to celebrate Father’s Day than with a day full of big boys’ toys! 21. It'll be tippy tappy against parked busses and more direct against teams that play more direct. The imbalance of the league is the problem causing teams to resort to parking the bus. Even up the on field and they'll be less buses and more open play.
