  1. Steve Winwood · Follow “When I was 13, I'd get the bus to music college in Birmingham, but within a year I was kicked out. The head called me in and asked what kind of music I liked. I said, ‘Paul Hindemith and Igor Stravinsky, Fats Domino and Ray Charles.’ He said, ‘you've either got to forget about the last two or leave this establishment.’ So I left. The world was just a different place back then, as anyone who grew up in the 50s will remember.” “I told myself at age 14, 'In the next year I want to be able to sing like Ray Charles, play harmonica like Little Walter, play guitar like BB King and play keyboards like Oscar Peterson.’ Needless to say, I didn't really achieve any of those things. But that's what drove me: self-improvement. There was no other way to do it. You couldn't go to a man to teach you how to sing like Ray Charles.” - SW
  2. History of Leicestershire in Images Mervin Wallace · ON THE 3rd FEBRUARY 1967 Robert George "Joe" Meek died. He was born on the 5th April 1929, an English record producer and songwriter considered one of the most influential sound engineers of all time. Credited as being one of the first to develop ideas such as using the recording studio as an instrument, and becoming one of the first producers to be recognised for his individual identity as an artist. Meek pioneered space age and experimental pop music, and assisted in the development of recording practices like overdubbing, sampling and reverberation. In 1966 Hinckley group at that time known as ‘The Four Matadors’ got the chance to record a single with the legendary Joe Meek, thanks to their manager Mick Tiernan. Two of the Joe Meek recordings were eventually released by Columbia Records who put out the single in January 1966 ‘A Man’s Gotta Stand Tall/Fast Cars and Money’. The credit Meeksville shown on the A Side. My copy unfortunately with a malformed label.🛡️

  6. Leicester City enquire over loan move for Chelsea youngster Lexi Potter 3rd February 2026 Kieran Lynch Chelsea’s Lexi Potter (pictured on loan at Crystal Palace in 2023) is the subject of interest from Leicester City (Stephen Flynn/SPP) Leicester City hope to complete a loan move for Chelsea youngster Lexi Potter on WSL transfer deadline day. Leicester City make enquiry over Lexi Potter As reported by The Guardian, the Foxes hope to sign Potter, who is regarded as one of England’s brightest young talents. Potter spent the last two seasons out on loan at Crystal Palace, making 43 appearances in total. Chelsea decided not to loan out Potter for the 2025-26 campaign, but the 19-year-old has struggled to get minutes. She has played just 29 minutes in the WSL this season. Across all competitions, she has made six appearances, with her only start coming against Liverpool in the League Cup in December. While a loan move to Leicester, who are in the WSL relegation battle, would help Potter get more minutes, Chelsea are reluctant to let her leave. Why are Chelsea reluctant to let Lexi Potter join Leicester City? The Guardian report that Chelsea are not willing to sanction the move unless they sign a midfielder during the January transfer window. It was reported on Monday that Chelsea are set to make a second offer for PSG’s Jennifer Echegini. Chelsea have already had one bid rejected for the Nigerian midfielder, with Le Parisien reporting that Echegini is seen as a vital part of the PSG team. https://twitter.com/TomJGarry/status/2018615775452647543 Should Echegini join, Chelsea will be without the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations winner for at least a month. Echegini is likely to be part of the Nigeria team that will defend their AFCON trophy when the tournament starts in March. Sonia Bompastor’s future as Chelsea head coach is uncertain following their 5-1 defeat to Manchester City. After the defeat, Bompastor lamented Chelsea’s lack of depth, stating she would have liked to have been “in a better place in terms of the last transfer windows”. Who have Leicester City signed? The potential signing of Potter would be a change in tactics for Leicester head coach Rick Passmoor. The Foxes have added plenty of experience during the transfer window so far with the additions of Alisha Lehmann, Ashleigh Neville and Rachel Williams. Leicester have also signed Emma Janssen from FC Rosengard and Sarah Mayling on loan from Aston Villa. Chelsea, meanwhile, have not signed a single player in the transfer window as yet. However, Oriane Jean-Francois’s £450,000 move to Aston Villa was a record sale for the Blues. https://shekicks.net/leicester-city-enquire-loan-chelsea-lexi-potter/
  7. Made In Leicester Nigel Freestone Leicestershire Football Archive · Nigel Freestone Did you know Leicester’s obsession with football actually started on eight wheels? Forget the grass pitches for a second! Back in 1882—two years before our city’s most famous club was even founded—Leicester was swept up in "Rinkomania." We’ve unearthed a fascinating story about a chaotic, high-speed football match played entirely on roller skates at the old Rutland Hall! From the roar of wooden wheels on Rutland Street to the grand 1909 opening of the Empress Roller Rink (right next to the Tigers ground!), this is the forgotten history of how skating shaped the sporting city we love today. 9. https://foxesofleicester.com/leicester-s-2016-title-winners-arrange-own-reunion-after-club-snub By Thomas Bradley Alderman A decade ago, Leicester City defied the laws of footballing physics. LCFC transformed from 5,000-1 outsiders into the most improbable and unfathomable Premier League champions in history. Maybe any top flight lore. Yet, as the ten-year anniversary of that 2016 miracle approaches, a concerning silence has descended from the King Power boardroom. In a revelation that underscores a growing chasm between club and heritage, former City right back Danny Simpson has confirmed that the architects of that triumph have received no contact from the hierarchy regarding an official celebration. Shocking, but not surprising! This lack of outreach is not merely an administrative oversight: it is more akin to an indictment of a badly run organisation currently adrift in the English Football League Leicester City’s 2016 title-winners arrange own reunion after club snub While the Leicester ownership remains fixated on financial sustainability and a managerial merry-go-round, the players who once united a city and wowed the world have apparently been forced to coordinate their own commemoration. Wow. "We haven’t heard anything from the club about a 10-year reunion for our Premier League title, but the lads are chatting and we'll have one – if we can help Leicester City during a difficult time, we would" Four Four Two Through a private WhatsApp group titled "Reunion 2026", icons like Riyad Mahrez, N'Golo Kante, and Shinji Okazaki are said to be planning their own tribute to a legacy the contemporary owner seems to have neglected altogether. Damning optics The optics are indeed damning, though wholly in keeping with the modern LCFC. At a time when the Foxes desperately need to reconnect with a disillusioned fanbase, they have seemingly ignored the very men who personify an 'all for one' ethos. Simpson’s admission that the squad is ready to help "get the fans back onside" suggests a group of legends more committed to the club's soul than those currently steering the ship: namely Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha (chairman Khun Top), along with director of football Jon Rudkin. If the 2016 heroes actually host their own party, it marks a tragic conclusion to football's greatest ever story.

  14. Back in the day · Ian Mckenzie A classic Instrumental form 1962 wich reached number 1 in the UK pop charts it was also number in the USA and on the B side is JUNGLE FEVER. Even though my hearing shite I still find myself humming this. Joe Meek was a great innovator shame he died so young.
  15. Professional football is nothing without the fans, sure the club management, those that advise Aiyawatt are culpable in our breaking of the rules but a points deduction that could lead to relegation hits the fans more than the management who will continue to draw their wages with I doubt any reduction. As much as I might want to see the club fairly punished I don't relish the idea of a massive, 10 point punishment deserved or not.
  16. Abandoned Leicester dance hall could be turned into shops It closed for the final time in 2013 and has been empty since Caitlin James Local Democracy Reporter 06:00, 01 Feb 2026 Sosho nightclub, Leicester. Image via author. (Image: Caitlin James) A derelict Leicester nightclub that was once an iconic dance hall could be given a new lease of life after plans were submitted. Proposals have emerged to turn the old Sosho building, in Humberstone Gate, into three shops, a cafe and a restaurant, with documents submitted to Leicester City Council for consideration. The plan would also see the next-door Bee supermarket extend onto the site. Originally named Palais De Danse upon its 1927 opening, the site was a well-loved dance hall. Since then, it has changed hands several times and operated as a modern nightclub until its closure in 2013. Plans to develop the site into 42 flats as part of a £6.9 million scheme were approved in 2018, but construction was not started in time, and the site remains empty. Documents supplied with the application say the building, which lies in the St George Conservation Area, is in a “poor state of repair”. Hardy Faraj, 42, owns the supermarket adjacent to the site and is responsible for submitting the application. He said: “We grew up in this area, and this area has died. We are trying to follow our vision to make the area busy again. “We are doing market research to see what the customer and the people in the area need.”
  17. The Issue Petition putting forward the case for reinstating a passenger service between Burton & Leicester serving the towns/National Forest attractions inbetween. This would be great for commuting and tourism with options for combined entry/travel tickets plus take traffic off the road for those who do general commuting during the week. The route would open up the National Forest to those not able to travel by private transport, and boost tourism and leisure along the route bringing people to towns such as Ashby, Coalville and Burton who wouldn't normally travel outside of Leicester, and vice versa, carrying people to Leicester. The line still exists and is used for freight purposes. Investment in stations would be required, but in the modern world these would not be staffed - just platforms. The following is lifted from ivanhoeline.org The Vision Our vision of the line is that it will be a busy commuter line in the week with a half-hourly service at peak periods. During the weekend the line will be used for tourism and leisure particularly to the National Forest. Proposed stations are Drakelow, Gresley, Moira, Ashby, Coalville, Bagworth & Ellistown, Meynell’s Gorse and Leicester South, a new station adjacent to the King Power Stadium and other sports stadia. We will also propose an integrated plan that interacts with bus services and makes use of park & ride facilities. Although we are primarily concerned with Burton to Leicester, once opened this line will have great potential which an ambitious operator could exploit.
