Guest MattP Posted 24 March 2016 Posted 24 March 2016 New Zealand has voted to keep their flag with the Union Jack in it. Delighted, despite all the propaganda the majority of people still refuse to see our flag as a symbol of repression and more one of liberty.

Guest MattP Posted 24 March 2016 Posted 24 March 2016 Try telling that to the Maori. The retain campaign actually had a lot of support from the Maori, because they signed the treaty of Waitangi with the crown, so having the union jack in the corner of the flag is a reminder of that. We're too quick to jump to the belief the flag means imperialism and war, it also exported a lot of liberty, language, justice and rule of law. Look around the World, New Zealand could be in a worse shape had someone else turned up, it's a pretty beautiful country built on a lot of the things we took there.

All of those things are true if you are white. The Maori have poorer health, lower life-expectancy, are less educated, and suffer higher levels of unemployment. They also have higher levels of drug addication and alcoholism, a higher suicide rate, and a prison population disproportionate to their numbers. In what way have they benefitted from British colonialism? Edit: having re-read your post, I would add that they already had liberty, language, justice and rule of law. We took away their liberty and substituted our own language, ideas of 'justice' and our own laws, for theirs.
Rincewind Posted 25 March 2016 Posted 25 March 2016 Saw this the other day. Jon Bon Jovi has opened a restaurant in New Jersy called the Soul Kitchen There are no prices displayed and people can pay what they like or help out. It is similar to The Real Junk Food Project but it is aimed at the needy more than cutting down on waste food.
