Alf Bentley Posted 4 May 2016 Posted 4 May 2016 My ageing brain can't handle the permutations as easily as it used to. In case you're the same, here's a handy guide from the Indy to who can qualify for Europe this season: http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/european/european-qualification-permutations-which-teams-can-still-qualify-for-the-champions-league-and-a7008056.html Correct me if my calculations are wrong, but..... Qualifiers as league positions stand (CL = Champions League; EL = Europa League): CL seeds: Leicester City CL group stage, unseeded: Spurs & Arsenal CL qualifying round: Man City (& Liverpool if they win EL 15-16) EL group stage: Man Utd & either West Ham (if Man Utd win FA Cup) or Palace (if they win FA Cup) EL qualifying round: West Ham (if Palace win FA Cup) or Southampton (if Man Utd win FA Cup) Potential for individual teams: Leicester City - guaranteed CL seeds Spurs - guaranteed CL group stage (barring mathematical miracles) Arsenal - CL group stage, CL qualifying round or EL Man City - CL group stage, CL qualifying round or EL Man Utd - CL group stage (unlikely), CL qualifying round, EL or miss qualification West Ham - CL group stage (unlikely), CL qualifying round, EL or miss qualification Southampton - EL or miss qualification Liverpool - CL qualifying round (if they win EL 15-16), EL or miss qualification Palace - EL group stage (if they win FA Cup) or miss qualification Chelsea - Miss qualification (barring mathematical miracle) Stoke & all lower teams - Have definitely missed qualification Footnote 1: There are no longer any "fair play" qualifiers Footnote 2: Man City play Arsenal this weekend, which affects permutations Bedtime!
Alf Bentley Posted 17 May 2016 Author Posted 17 May 2016 I agree. I don't! West Ham are left biting their nails over Europa League qualification, hoping that Man Utd win the FA Cup and that Liverpool don't win the Europa League....that's the gist of it now, I think? As I understand it, if Liverpool get into the Champions League by winning this year's Europa League, we get 5 Champions League places.....but only 2 Europa League. So, if Palace won the FA Cup, those would go to Man Utd (5th place) & Palace (FA Cup winners). Southampton would miss out along with West Ham. Yet if Sevilla win the Europa League and Man Utd win the FA Cup, we're back to 4 in the Champions League & 3 in the Europa League: Man Utd (FA Cup/5th), Southampton (6th) & West Ham (7th). Vlad the Fox started it!
howlinmadmurfdoc Posted 18 May 2016 Posted 18 May 2016 Every Champions League team is seeded. It's just we are in the first pot. Arsenal will be in the second I think and Spurs will be seeded 4th.
