Leicester born, bred and semi educated, I've not lived in Leicester for many a year now, but the feelings the OP so aptly describes NEVER go away, not even for a moment.

Don't be so hard on yourself.

I'm not, I blame my parents.& school nurse for not realising that I needed glasses before I was age 10, I found out by trying a mates glasses on and literally couldn't believe my eyes at how clear the world could be and how easy it was to read what the teachers had written on the blackboard. Of course it's also  a reflection on the teaching at the Junior & Secondary School's I didn't quite pass the old eleven plus (grammar school entrance exam) could only go as far as "o" levels in the comprehensive school I attended (some schools I wouldn't even have got the shot at the "O" levels then) and I had to go to Loughborough to get my A levels.
