14th March. The Feast of Sevilla

Recommended Posts

Posted

This day is call'd the Feast of Sevilla

He that out-lives this day, and comes safe home,

Will stand a tip-toe when this day is named,

And rouse him at the name of Sevilla.

He that shall see this day, and live old age,

Will yearly on the Vigil feast his neighbours,

And say, “Tomorrow is Saint Sevilla!”.

Then will he strip his sleeve, and show his scars:

Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot:

But He will remember, with advantages 2

What feats he did that day. Then shall our names,

Familiar in his mouth as household words,

Craig the Manager, Vardy and Mahrez,

Drinkwater and Schmeichel, Huth and Morgan,

Be in their flowing Cups freshly remembered.

This story shall the good man teach his son:

And March 14th shall never go by,

From this day to the ending of the World,

But we, in it, shall be remembered;

We few, we happy few, we band of brothers:

For He to day that sheds his blood 3 with me,

Shall be my brother: be he ne’re so vile 4

This day shall gentle his Condition 5

And Gentlemen in England, now a bed 6

Shall think themselves cursed they were not here;

And hold their manhoods cheap, whilst any speaks,

That fought with us upon Saint Sevilla day!

1 party with

2 with exaggerations

3 or tears

4 even if he is a vile person

5 make him seem acceptable to us

6 Leicester fans who couldn't make the game

Apologies to the original Shakespeare for small editorial changes. I think most of this is reasonably straightforward to understand, but I've added a couple of footnotes where I thought it might be useful.

Shakey's next press conference:

"Friends, Foxes, countymen, lend me your ears;
I come to bury Ranieri, not to praise him.
The trophies men win lives after them;
Their tinkering is oft interred with their bones;
So let it be with Ranieri. The noble Schmeichel
Hath told you Ranieri had not lost the dressing room:
If it were so, it was a grievous fault;
And grievously hath Ranieri answer'd it.
Here, under leave of Schmeichel and the rest, —
For Schmeichel is an top quality keeper;
So are they all, all top quality players, —
Come I to speak in Ranieri's former role.
He was my boss, faithful and just to me:
But Drinky says that I assisted;
And Drinky is an honorable man."
