How does your grandchild feel about the name situation? Are they old enough to know and understand?
It’s an interesting point about names and carrying them on, I am the only person to carry on my family name, although I have taken the name to the other side of the world - maybe killing it off in England.
I have boys now, but don’t think I would be too bothered about them taking their partners names when they eventually are old enough to marry and have their own family. I think I’d actually prefer they took the partners names than have a double barrelled name.

To young to know yet (18 months :) )

just because i know you are desperate to see her (and not at all because im the worlds biggest show off grandparent)..

In my daughters case, the child has, and will carry the combined name, which will do as you say and not be connected by surname to her preceeding family. (how fortunate is my family that my brother was able to pump out a true heir to the family name and keep it alive for the future :) )

It begs the question as to how "valuable" our names are... the carrying on of the family name seems somewhat historic and outdated, and perhaps no longer relevant in modern society, having said that I find it slightly weird how many people are obsessed by the "family name".

I also wonder how modern people deal with the concept of it "dying" with them if they are unfortunate enough to only manage to produce a second rate female, unworthy of carrying it on lol

It's going to be harder to trace family trees in the future what with name changes, mixed marriages and surrogate dads etc.

I think thats an understandable thought, but given our amazing amount of record keeping these days, i dont think its a real concern.

Back in the day, when our names were our only evidence of existence they were important. now, im not so sure.

I guess, but my sister had a surrogate father for her son and he will never know who his Dad was.

Don't forget that there are lots of people who would love to, but are unable to have any children,
