I tell you what really needs discussing, blokes taking their Mrs's surname when they get married... now that's a whole other level of weird.

What if your surname is stupid and theirs is not going to subject you and your offspring to lifetime of bullying and smart arse comments?

My cousin's husband did that, but when they had kids, not when they got married.

His name was Ball and he was worried that their kids would get the piss ripped out of them.

You get a pass on that one...

Ball is alright, plenty worse than that about!

This is me. Thankfully I never got bullied as a result, but I've heard every joke, pun and smart arse comment going.

Having said that, I'd feel like it was an insult to my family to get rid of it all together, and if I was to lose my surname the family name would just die out. I'm the only male offspring to take the name into the next generation. I just couldn't do it.

It was good enough for one of our World Cup winners......and he ended up getting the piss ripped out of him, anyway, due to his squeaky voice! :D

Me and the wife both have surnames beginning with H too. I kept my surname when we got married but she double barrelled.

In order to keep my family name going I insisted that our kids have my surname (the wife’s got brothers and nephews to keep her family name going

However, when our kids were born she persuaded me to let them double barrel too.

I’m still bitter about it as I think their double barrel name sounds stupid but as always, the wife wins...

That's basically my argument too, I'm the only male below the age of 50 in our family so I have a Goddamn responsibility to keep the name going, whereas, similar to your other half, she has a brother to keep her name going.

I imagine it's difficult to argue with a woman whom has just carried the kids for 9 months over their names, i'm not looking forward to that task.

There is definitely a fine line between a lovely double-barrelled name and sounding like a solicitors firm that went under.

I like my anonymity on here, Babs. Part of the fun of it all!

But it's originally German I believe, and is not too dissimilar to a part of the human anatomy.

Took eachother's names. I did it partly to get rid of one of my first names and partly cause I don't give a hoots about family names really.

Double-barrelled is stupid and annoying though. I feel guilty enough knowing my future kids will get both names... Meh...

For me, the last name is of the fathers. Are we fighting famine or in the middle of a world war? Because it sounds like it judging by how many people want Their family name to keep on existing.

There are no more males to carry that last name? Well, How is that the other party's problem?

some people do it to get on their wife's good side like Babs said, some think it's a cool quirk while others are too embarrassed by their own last name

Edit: but yeah, in the and it's a choice people make and it's hardly any of my business.
