Time to scrap the Hundred

Recommended Posts

The counties remain in dispute with the ECB about payments they should receive to compensate for the Hundred.  There is no supporter base for any of the likely franchises. Furthermore, the 50 over competition will be greatly diminished as players will be contarcted to the new franchise.

So just as there has never beeen more momentum in taking the 50 over format forward and the opportunity to see the World Cup winners play for their counties, there will be a new format, new franchises. The World Cup win was the culmination of years of building the team and its ethos to the success it achieved a few days ago. This success, but more importantly, the interest generated amongst a new generation of potential fans,, should be promoted and highlighted over the next few seasons. A new format to the English game is not needed and should be scrapped. If it goes ahead over the next season and beyond the chances of England being able to defend their trophy will be seriouslyweakened.

I'm aware the new competion will have some free to air tv coverage but it's unlikely to have a long lasing positive impact. It's never likely to be played internationally. If the idea is to finish a game in a short as time as possible, better to speed up the 20 over game - which could easily be done through minor rule changes.

It's a competition not needed and is more likely to be harmful to the long term future of the game. The ECB should scrap it.

(PS iIm aware there have been discussionson the Hundred  in Leics CC thread, but this does not relate to Leicestershire - which won't exist in the new competition...)
