Not a chance blaming no pressure season. That’s a lame cliche that gets rolled out with no evidence.

As pep said last week, can’t blame that because they were so good vs Wolves so suddenly it’s no pre season?

Liverpool looked fantastic vs Arsenal and suddenly it’s the no pre season why they lose 7-2?

Its clearly nothing to do with fitness that the goals and stats are being blown out the water.

Its purely a case of teams have less discipline and the ‘training match’ feel will always play on the players, either consciously or subconsciously.

From bigger things like confidence and roaring that will get the adrenaline going, to smaller things like being ‘nervous’ when taking an away corner in front of fans spitting at you and shouting all kinds of crap.

Footballs are only Humans , they feel the pressure.

...I agree with this to a point!!!

The human aspect is a big part of this, Villa players on a high through this game would normally have been looking to tighten up when  four goals up as this was a big potential win. As soon as you adjust your thinking you allow a avenue for the opposition to find a way back, should they score just after the mental adjustment then a swing comes into play and any further gains by the losing team deflates the team originally in the ascendancy and energises the chasing team. Villa would then try to re-assert their dominance but have already lost confidence and rhythm and so ends up going through the motions.

Villas' result is what happens when you keep on playing in the manner which has brought you success, it is only the realisation of the supporters of what you have gained and the need to protect what you have which leads to the introduction of fear.

Until the reintroduction of crowds there will be an absence of fear for some teams.

A big claim at the moment is that the quality of defending has significantly dropped this season. Which on paper rings true. But I wonder if the shorter break takes a bigger physiological toll on bigger players such as your Van Dijks, Maguires and so on. They are bigger units and without a proper break, maybe they are suffering more.

If this is true then the games current trend of top clubs playing with attacking wingbacks is increasing the amount of pressure on the centre backs. As a result

of the exhaustion and the pressure, they are crumbling.

Another aspect to consider is just how the game has changed in recent years. 4-4-2 became 4-2-3-1 and we’re in a 5-4-1 era now. But again, for the top clubs they are trying to play more of a 2-7-1/3-6-1. The latter formations can bring a high degree of attacking intensity, but on the counter will leave the teams fundamentally short.

We’re going to see a lot more crazy before fans return. More ridiculous scores. Enjoy the ride. THIS will be the weirdest season most fans will ever witness - I am Mystic Meg.
