I’m looking for some advice on retraining to become a gas engineer. I’ve worked in the gas industry for 25 years but more commercial side building testing and piping up large units , 3 years ago I set up a ltd company and became a contractor doing small bore pipe fitting on gas sites mainly through agencies but since ir35 tax changes it’s become less profitable but I’m determined to still work for myself.
I have experience working on big gas systems but never done the domestic side but my new plan is to retrain on domestic boilers so I can work locally and have constant work.
I’m thinking about doing an intensive course over a few months that also place you with a company to learn your trade and wondered if anyone had done this before. There are loads of training companies out there but it’s a minefield trying to find the right one.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Aren’t domestic gas boilers being phased out?

Might be worth checking the viability of retraining to do this job for, say, the next 10-15 years or so.

I’m 48 so that should see me through 😁

There is a training centre in Measham but not sure if that's within range for you. The company I used to work for sent all there employees there, and since I became self employed i have been back (not for a while as I no longer do gas just general plumbing etc. The name is CMAT (central midlands assessment and training) and they do block courses in most gas related stuff and it is a very relaxed atmosphere and they are very nice and knowledgeable people. Generally there is around 10 people maximum per course so you get helped and talked through things if you get a bit bamboozled. Not sure if they can put you in touch with prospective employers or not but I would certainly recommend them as a training centre.

Wow great thanks anything in the East Midlands is great as they all seem to be in Birmingham and also I’ve heard reports of some not being great so a recommendation is just what I need. I’ll look them up and contact them , just at the research stage but will sign up for one in a couple of months if it’s decent
