Surely any argument/discussion can be supported by a few facts - we don’t need speculation on players quality or style of play because, as you mentioned, they are completely subjective, However: Three relegations in four seasons. From Premier League football to League One in four years. Just six Premier League wins in 2024/25. Twenty-five defeats in one Premier League season. Eighty goals conceded in 38 matches. Nine consecutive home league games without scoring — a top-flight record. Relegated from the Premier League with five games remaining. Over £180 million in pre-tax losses across three financial years. Six-point deduction for financial rule breaches. Season-ticket renewal rates falling from 97.6% to 79.1% over two years £89.5m loss in 2022/23, the first relegation season. £19.4m loss in 2023/24, despite winning the Championship. £71.1m loss in 2024/25, despite returning to the Premier League. Staff costs reached 116% of revenue in 2022/23 and 101.6% in 2023/24. An independent commission found a breach of the applicable financial rules, resulting in a six-point deduction in February 2026. That’s a fairly anaemic statement from the Trust, sadly. I understand as presumably they still want a relationship with the club (?). It just doesn’t really convey the breathtaking decline and scale of ineptitude by those running the club, imo. Everyone seems scared to offend/upset the preciously thin-skinned owner. Nothing will change until Top is publicly and consistently called out as the architect in chief of this sh*tshow. Rudkin will then just be collateral. How did a club with such sporting and financial opportunities allow the decline to continue through three separate relegations? Financial mismanagement, points deduction, record breaking losing streaks….and it’s still getting worse. The quality of managerial appointments are matters of opinion, but the facts would suggest that these have also been poorly thought through. I’m sure someone with more intelligence than me can put together a compelling, stat-based, anti-business plan of what we have spectacularly achieved in such a short space of time.

Wtf is Middle Eastern money doing to mainstream sport? This isn’t anti-Middle East, and Western sport was hardly pure beforehand. But there’s a point where money stops enhancing sport and starts distorting it. The Man City/Premier League debacle. Huge boxing bouts in Riyadh with virtually no atmosphere. The LIV Golf circus. F1 increasingly following the biggest cheque, and so on. Sport needs investment. But.

I think I’m with the man with the hat on this. The Outer Space Treaty was created in a very particular era. The United States and Soviet Union were armed with enough nuclear weapons to destroy one another, yet both broadly recognised the value of rules that prevented an unrestricted battlefield. That assumption looks increasingly fragile and a lot less likely to be followed in this era. Also, individual loon-tube squillionaires are now part of the conversation, rather than just states, countries or blocs. The goalposts have been well and truly burned down, rather than merely moved, since the 60’s, imo.

Hmmm. Intelligence limits what you can do, as well as the threats you can think of. A bacteria or piece of moss on a fence cannot understand the human Ronsealing it, kicking a ball against it, or deciding to tear it down. Not because the human is hiding their intentions, but because those intentions exist beyond the bacteria/moss (insert whatever ‘lesser’ organism takes your fancy) capacity to comprehend. With Ai/ASi humanity may face the same problem…we are the bacteria or moss.
