IT WAS A RARE moment when Leicester City won the Premier League in 2016. It was the most surprising title triumph since Nottingham Forest won the old first division in 1978”

Got it wrong in the very first line, considering what the articles about the author should know that, ours was the most surprising title ever and nothing comes close, some heavy nostalgia to try and argue otherwise.

Makes me laugh that the whole purpose of the article is to demonstrate how money is the most important variable.

Yet, the opening line talks about an achievement in a time where money was hardly relevant.

Exactly that, I’m not going to slate it but if you’re arguing which is more surprising it’s simply not a comparison, we’re comparing an era of football where no one had finished top 4 for over a decade except for the usual suspects (or since) and an era where Derby had not long won a title and second division sides were winning the FA Cup.

Then when you get into the context of both clubs at the time it only becomes clearer who’s is more of a shock. Just an odd comment considering what the article is about.

Yep, as you have rightly pointed out, the context is a complete contrast so to write an article about the rise of money in football and then to create a comparison with Forest is ridiculous.

There is no changing the fact that Forest achieved a lot in that period. However, they were already a well-respected side and were not up against the ‘closed shop’ that the PL is nowadays.

Like you say, you only have to look at the stats to see how very few teams outside of the ‘big six’ have broken the mould. By breaking the mould, I mean even finish in the top six too. Never mind winning the league.

It is not even a comparison to be honest, I also do think that Forest being so bad for about 25 years also makes their fans delude themselves even more.

I’d bet a significant amount that nothing even remotely similar to 15/16 will happen in English football (in my lifetime anyway).
