Employment Help Needed Please

Obviously get certain industries need a large staff force all year round, some industries especially at peak times but to give 8 months notice on a days holiday? Think it’s obscene that’s legal, workers rights need to be seriously overhauled it’s not right so much of the population is backed in to these corners while the gap between rich and poor gets larger every day.

Try to look at it from the managers perspective.  Firstly they are really talking about booking a week or two weeks holidays, not the odd day off for a funeral or whatever.  Nowhere does it say they wouldn't allow you to change a holiday day if needed, and I am sure any decent manager would always try to help, as long as they are able to cover the resident's needs.  Secondly, the OPs wife is obviously in a supervisory role, hence why only one is allowed off at a time, the other staff need managing.   Thirdly as someone else noted, an employe is legally obliged to allow an employee holiday - so if they let someone leave it unbooked they are effectively allowing them to force time off at the end of the year, which is unfair on others who would love that time off, but play buy the rules.

While HR work for the company not the employee, I do find that most policy like this is driven by a desire to treat people fairly, to avoid any legal breaches, and to ensure they have the staff they legally need on any given day to care for the residents (or indeed provide the customers expected level of service in other industries).  I can also believe that policy gets firmed up because there are always those who take the piss, and impair others right to a fair distribution of holidays.  Its not that much to ask that you plan your main holiday in advance, most people do.
