What we have now, but better

Okay, I’m reading some sound criticisms of RM’s preferred style of play on other threads. Taking the team we currently have now, what’s a better way to play them? 
 

Easy to say, ‘well, I wouldn’t have chosen these players’, but I’m interested to hear what we could (and should) be doing with the current crop. 
 

Selection, formation, strategy, tactics.

We have about 7 players who can play center back. Go for a back 3 and build from there. Stop possession at all costs and more direct from the back to protect the keeper and the backline.

For a start we should have recruited more aggressive, high energy, pacy, motivated players and played more direct, attacking football. When the other team has the ball at the back, coordinate high energy pressing and force mistakes, particularly at home. This is league 1. Teams wont be able to deal with it.

 

We have too many players  like Cullen, Chaplin, BDCR (many of which Martin recruited) that are slow, predictable and take far too long to make the pass. We should have overlapping full backs and attack teams. We afford teams far too long to set up their defence and get set because we mess around with it too long at the back.

So what every successful team does against us you mean? We’re so easy to set up against. So predictable with weaknesses exposed for even the thickest of football fans to see.

I dont understand Souttar in this team. He is too slow, not very good on the ball and really shakey at the back. If we are going to be controlling from the back, we need someone who can play with it and bring it out.

 

Will Alves is the model of the footballers we need here. Intent to always make something happen, alongside some of the other young players. The experienced pros need to learn from them.

Well its not difficult is it. There's no need to complicate the style of play

Well for all start, either don't play Mcarthy or instruct him not to attempt a pass to anyone within his own half. He can't do it, let's stop trying. 

 

I agree with wingback. Pretty much all our faullbacks and Burns for that matter seem suited to wingback roles and most of our wingers like Alves, Howell etc prefer being central so move them inside more and have the likes of Mcfarlane and Joeseph use the width. 3 at the back that will allow two deep lying playmaker like Braybrooke and page to play in front of them and find the striker and 2 AM's.

What ever system we set up for.

The aim of the game is to not conceed but score more than the opposition..

 

At least 6 of our team have played Premier League level.

 

The manager is the one holding them back.

 

The perfect goal does exist,  but unfortunately won't win us games, sorry Martin....
