Craig Posted 4 October 2004 Posted 4 October 2004 Leicester City 2 PNE 3 Billy Davies is forced to make changes to his side for the Carling Cup clash with the Foxes, with John Curtis and Guylain Ndumbu-Nsungu both cup tied for the second game at the Walkers Stadium in 72 hours! Mark Jackson is handed his full debut by Billy Davies coming into the attack to partner Cresswell, Jackson's reserve team-mate Michael Brown could also make his debut tonight as he takes a place on the bench. In midfield Paul McKenna and Eddie Lewis both come back into the starting line-up with Callum Davidson dropping to the bench. A bright start from the Foxes and the North End defence are called into evasive action blocking two or three efforts from the edge of the area but Lonergan is not called into action. A great chance for North End in the fourth minute when Eddie Lewis picks the ball up in his own half and charges towards the Leicester defence. He reaches the area and lofts a wonderful ball into the path of McKenna, the midfielder reaches the ball before Pressman, dinks the ball out towards Jackson and the youngster lofts the ball towards the six yard box. Cressy and Lewis await but they are bundled out of it by the Foxes defence as Pressman scrambles back. Scrappy goalmouth scrambles seem to be Leicester City's forte and they seem to thrive off set-pieces launched into the box. Joey Gudjonsson seems to be on the end of everything that is knocked down but has yet to find the target. The Foxes are denied by Lonergan. Stewart floated a ball towards goal from yet another set-piece and Blake just let the ball skim off his head (11) and the ball seemed destined for the back of the net but Lonergan palmed the ball away to safety. A good moment for the Lilywhites as Eddie Lewis receives the ball in a great position on the left after Cresswell had flicked a cross into his patch. Jackson was waiting in the six-yard box but Lewis' cross was deflected away for a corner. North End have some good pressure in the 20th minute and Lewis is given plenty of space once again to whip a dangerous ball into six -yard box, only a good blocking header denies PNE. A slight worry for North End as Wright and Claude Davis chase a ball down the flank and the young striker catches the Jamaican on the back of the leg and Davis looks like he is in agony. Balderston waves his magic wand though and Davis recovers to continue with the game. Should North End have had a penalty in the 29th minute? Broomes was in acres of space on the left and he nudged the ball past the right-back into the path of Eddie Lewis in the box, the American took one touch past the challenge of the Leicester defender and looked to have been caught, he went sprawling. A shot at goal from PNE and it was Brian O'Neil blasting it only inches over the bar after the Leicester defence had failed to clear their lines. Goal!!! It has been coming and it is Preston North End!!! Great work from Mark Jackson to disposess Chris Makin deep into Leicester territory, he played a first time ball into the box and Cresswell won the ball to slot past Pressman with ease (33)!! North End have the Foxes rocking, they should have had a second only minutes after scoring the first!!! Cresswell again the danger getting onto the end of a McKenna through ball, he took one look up and hit a low shot down to Pressman's right, the ball came back to Cresswell and he found Jackson who took one look up and sent the ball to Pressman's left but the big keeper got across to save!!! The Foxes hit back and would have scored but for a great last ditch tackle from Broomes, it was another goalmouth scramble for Leicester that fell to Tiatto in space on the left, he drilled a low ball across the six-yard box and with Lonergan beaten Broomes challenged Tommy Wright with the goal unguarded, the ball went out for a corner. Micky Adams makes a surprise change with Dabizas replaced by Matt Elliott on 36 minutes. Dickson Etuhu has a great chance bursting into the box in the 42 minute onto the end of a O'Neil ball, he has a sight of goal only five yards out but the angle is too tight and the defender blocks for a corner. North End had a four on four really taking the game to the Foxes. Richard Cresswell is the recipient of another great ball from McKenna and the former Leicester striker drills the ball straight across goal but Pressman does well to parry the ball away. In the third and final minute of injury time the Lilywhites have a great chance once again as Cresswell picks the ball up on the left, the North End players surge into the box but Cressy decides to shoot and it curls just over the angle of the bar and that proves to the last action of the half. Second Half Both teams come out to the sound of the hunting trumpet and there are no changes on either side. The first action of the half is a good talking to for Tommy Wright after Claude Davis was attempting to guide the ball out for a goal kick, he received a whack on the back of the leg from Wright. Nathan Blake almost grabbed the equaliser on 53 minutes when Makin sprung clear down the right and swung a ball into the path of the Leicester striker and he should have done better than balsting his header over the bar from three yards out. PNE refuse to sit back on their lead and Richard Cresswell is the chief recipient of good North End play again. Lewis surging towards goal and he chips a ball into the path of Cresswell who produces a diving header that bends wide of Pressman's goal. Leicester make another change when Gillespie comes on for the injured Wright on 56 minutes. North End look to have weathered the early Leicester storm and are back to playing some neat football again. McKenna surges into the box on the end of a Lewis chip and though he gets a boot on it to direct past Pressman or into the path of Jackson. Disaster strikes at the Walkers Stadium!!! Claude Davis is sent-off for making a superb challenge on Gareth Williams who broke clear of the North End defence. To add insult to injury it is also a penalty (66). Andy Lonergan is then booked for not standing on the goal-line but instead standing behind it??? Is that the law these days? Goal!!! After an eternity of appeals from the North End players Gudjonsson slams the ball past Lonergan from the spot to make the score 1-1 (68). An absolute injustice. North End make an immediate change sending on Davidson for Eddie Lewis and then seconds later Mark Jackson is replaced by Andy Smith. Goal!!! The game is turned on its head!!! Keith Gillespie swings a cross towards the six yard box and Nathan Blake powers home a header with plenty of bodies in the box. Lonergan has to be at his best to deny Williams who arrived late in the North End box danced past a challenge and hit a shot low towards goal but the PNE keeper did well to deny him. Graham Alexander is taken off at the expense of a more attacking option with Omar Daley sent on for the final 10 minutes of the game. North End are stretched as they go in search of an equaliser. Gillespie swings a ball into the box and Mawene falters with Blake lurking, in the end Lonergan is forced to make a point blank save from the Leicester striker and the ball is scrambled behind for a corner. A late sub for the Foxes sees Danny Tiatto replaced by Jason Wilcox as the fourth official signals for three minutes of added time. Drama in the last seconds of the game Cresswell is sent sprawling in the area by Jordan Stewart and the referee has no hesitation in pointing to the spot. But in a gross inconsistency from referee Mr Mathieson he only gives a yellow card, it's a goalscoring opportunity so why no red card??? Goal!!! Cresswell slams the ball home and it is 2-2 in the most dramatic and controversial of circumstances. That proves to be the last action of normal time so we go into extra-time. First Period of Extra Time The first action in extra-time is a Gudjonsson volley that sails over the bar from 30-yards out. Despite being a man the Lilywhites press forward and after Smith breaks the offside trap Cresswell almost gets on the end of the Irishman's cross but the ball falls behind him. An unbelievable chance for Preston to take the lead. Daley slots Smith into the channel and the Irishman shoots on sight, Pressman parries and Smith is there again to smash the ball at goal but it is yards over the bar. North End are having the better of the play and they win a free-kick deep in Leicester territory. McKenna tees the ball up for Davidson who hits a low left-footed effort that has Pressman scrambling to his left to save. This is unbelievable!!! It is all North End, Daley outstrips his marker and sends a great ball across goal, Mawene gets a looping header in and it has Pressman beaten, the ball hits the underside of the bar and Cresswell follows up to slam the ball back towards goal but it just clips the bar and goes over. Second Period of Extra Time Once again it is Leicester that have the first shot of the period but Williams' effort is on the half volley and goes at least a yard wide. Leicester seem to be using the extra-man a lot better in this half and Gillespie is seeing a lot of the ball, he whips an early cross towards the near post but it is cut out by Mawene for a corner. Goal!!! Unbelievable!!! This is remarkable!!! North End are in the lead!!! Smith chased a ball hard down the left and won it... he crossed it across goal, Cresswell missed with a header but the ball comes straight back at him from Daley and just six yards out he has the easiest of chances and taps home to make it 3-2!!! After a hair-raising last few minutes the final whistle is blown and it is scenes of celebration for players, fans, and staff of Preston North End!!! Bring on David Moyes!!!! Leicester: Pressman, Makin, Heath, Dabizas, Stewart, Tiatto, Williams, Gudjonsson, Scowcroft, Blake, Wright. Subs: Logan, Elliott, Wilcox, Gillespie, Canero. PNE: Lonergan; Alexander, Broomes, Mawene, Davis; Etuhu, O'Neil, McKenna, Lewis, Cresswell, Jackson. Subs: Ward, Brown, Daley, Smith, Davidson. Attendance: 6,751 Bloody hell, how biased is that?!

Anish Posted 4 October 2004 Posted 4 October 2004 Indeed very biased - we don't get any of that enthusiasm on our site. Although there's nothing on the pitch to make you enthusiastic about LCFC at the mo.
Anish Posted 4 October 2004 Posted 4 October 2004 oh the bit about "superb challenge" for the penalty and "disaster strikes" made me crack up!
