Scarby Posted 2 November 2004 Posted 2 November 2004 Berti Vogts Resigned from skysports The German's future had been the subject of intense speculation for the last few weeks after the disappointing draw with Moldova which left them facing an uphill battle to qualify for the 2006 World Cup.The SFA held meetings to discuss his position last week with a decision originally due to be made on Thursday, but now they have revealed Vogts has offered to stand down as coach. "The Scottish FA confirms that Berti Vogts has today offered his resignation as Scotland's national coach," The SFA said in a statement "His resignation has been accepted by the Scottish FA board and he leaves his position by mutual consent." Vogts was sad to be stepping down from his role after coming in for fierce criticism from some quarters. "With great reluctance, myself and the Scottish Football Association, and in particular John McBeth and David Taylor, who have been a source of great strength and support, have made a joint decision to close this chapter in my life at the helm of Scottish international football," said Vogts. "From my point of view, the decision has been made with a heavy heart as I have enjoyed my tenure at the hub of the Scottish football team and the warmth that I have experienced from the people of Scotland. "I must say that the major factor in this decision has been the disgraceful abuse that I have suffered, especially of late. "It has degenerated into a physical nature, especially on recent occasions where I have been spat upon. "This is not acceptable behaviour in a civilised society and I know that the vast majority of Scots will join me in my disgust at this act by a very tiny minority. "The abuse is something that people in public life must get used to, but now it is having a serious effect upon my home life. "I cannot sit by, as no-one would, to be involved in the abuse that I have to endure. "And it is this that has made this very hard decision inevitable." Former Everton and Rangers manager Walter Smith is the strong favourite to replace Vogts, while Gordon Strachan and Gary McAllister have also been linked as candidates. I dont think this fair as IMO he did what he could with what players he had! a shame really Scotland are going to struggle. He was the best man to take them forward.
Hullfox Posted 2 November 2004 Posted 2 November 2004 Don't know whether you're right or wrong there Scarby. Whoever gets the job though will find it difficult. The pool of players available just isn't world class i'm afraid. Maybe Mickey will apply.

Anish Posted 2 November 2004 Posted 2 November 2004 What has Walter Smith done to deserve the job? Sure he won the league and cups a few times at Rangers - but at that time Celtic were a spent force and he had by far and away the best squad in that league. He did nothing at Everton, and when he left they were in a relegation dogfight. If I was Gordan Strachan I would be pissed that Smith is getting the job. Meritocracy my arse.
Ash Posted 3 November 2004 Posted 3 November 2004 Gary McAllister or Walter Smith will be next Scotland manager !
Scow Posted 3 November 2004 Posted 3 November 2004 Gordon Strachan would be a much better appointment - What has Walter Smith got that Strachan hasn't? Except for a few tin pot trophies with Rangers....
Ash Posted 3 November 2004 Posted 3 November 2004 I dont think Strachan would want the job.....I think he's holding out for a big job , Maybe Man Utd remember he was a Ex Man Utd aswell

Scotland seem to want him as well, things couldnt go better for him
Anish Posted 4 November 2004 Posted 4 November 2004 Ha, Manure will never go for Strachan until he wins some trophies. If Strachan thinks he can get the ManU job he is deluded.
