Thracian Posted 19 July 2006 Posted 19 July 2006 I've been playing four and a half seasons (with an unscheduled break of 6 months) and have played off between 8 and 10 over all but the first 18 months of that time. Have just joined Brandon Woods near Coventry - surely one of the best municipal courses in the country and right alongside the River Avon and a nature reserve. Visually it is stunning. It is much harder than my previous club's course at Ansty, much tighter with trees flanking every fairway and the river running alongside several of the opening holes. My biggest "handicap" is being short sighted and not having sharp enough eyesight to spot where all my stray balls land, and there's plenty of those. It must be lovely being one of these professionals where wayward hits bounce back into play off the spectators and where umpteen stewards are waiting down the course to immediately locate your ball. Not only that but a caddy carries a book with yardages to the inch or two, he calculates based on your hitting distances on that morning's practise, he has an informed opinion on course stategy and has studied the putting lines of every green. Mix that in with especially manicured courses and tournaments scheduled to catch the best weather and I reckon that lot has to be worth five/six shots a round. I've tried and tried to convince my wife that she could fulfil a worthy role in her twilight years by operating devotedly as my personal caddy (complete with trolley and bag) but she only responds once she's got something heavy in her hand and always with a strangely aggressive choice of negative words that basically summarise as "sod off". No matter, there really is no greater thrill at my age than the rare opccasions when you whack a golf ball right out of the sweet spot and see it bouncing jauntily down the middle of the fairway or those even rarer days when you somehow land an eagle. It makes all the endless frustrations worthwhile when football days are finished. And the beer afterwrds tastes as good whatever your age!

Daggers Posted 19 July 2006 Posted 19 July 2006 I was introduced to the game in Venezuela, where we had to drink a beer on each hole. Consequently, I didn't really learn how to play properly! I've just played a nine ho;e [sober] and got round in a shocking 65 ~ so I've started a load of lessons to improve. Great game, really lovely. There's something Zen about golf ~ where you can empty your head of other stuff just to play each shot. In my case, emptying the head comes easy
Bridge Posted 19 July 2006 Posted 19 July 2006 I've played this four lettered word game most of my life. Play my golf mostly at Eastmoreland and Broadmoor golf clubs in Portland Oregon. My handicap is up to a 4 now as those pesky 3 ft putts take on the shape of rattlesnakes when anything is on the game. As I'm a frequent visitor to Leicester (family in the old town) I've played a fair amount of golf on your side of the pond, mostly at Scraptoft GC. I find the pace of play refreshing when visiting..as we don't play much match play and 5 hr rounds are the norm at home. We have a British Open competition on Saturday with an interesting twist..everyone picks a player before they tee it up. His score on the final Sunday of the open, if under par is deducted from our net score. If your man shots over par nothing is lost. Any advice for a good last day scorer?

Lovely to play, some excellent holes, really popular but also quite forgiving in the main. I love the way you can call the fish up by banging your feet on the wooden bridge near the tea hut.

I normally scare the fish by hitting my ball in lake.
