Thracian Posted 20 July 2006 Posted 20 July 2006 What's left of the wall I've got a piece! Never been to Berlin but have read some excellent articles which suggest it is now one of the most vibrant and interesting cities in Europe to visit. Hope you enjoy it.
Willis Posted 20 July 2006 Posted 20 July 2006 Berlin is a great place - it is a really colurful city with a massive history. Go to the checkpoint charlie museum - it's quite hard to find but well worth it, there is an area where they've left some of the "best bits" of the wall i.e. interesting murals and that. Then there's the new Reichstag and Brandenburg gate, very impressive and once your done with all that go into an area called Mitte which is where there are loads of bars and clubs. But there are masses of bars anyway in Berlin so it's not hard to find beer. If yuo go to Zoologischer Garten it's quite bohemian as well. There's loads more than that to do - but that's what I can remember off the top of my head.
Deathside Posted 23 July 2006 Posted 23 July 2006 I've been to Berlin 3 times First - Prior to German reunification - That was fúckin scary - East German guards pointing machine guns at you from their look out tower things on the other side of the wall - Don't think they liked having a Punk squat right next to them (The Rashaus) - I'm still chuffed that my old passport has stamps from East Germany Second - A couple of months after reunification - Most notable thing was the 'scar' that ran through the city where the wall had previously been - The most memorable thing though was the gig - It was on my birthday at the legendary Ex Club (somewhere I'd always wanted to play) and it was a joint headline between us (Extreme Noise Terror) and Brazilian band Ratos de Porão Third - A couple of years after reunification - The least interesting visit - No real signs of where the wall used to be - Most memorable part of that trip was being on the same flight as Suzi Quattro (She also had a gig in Berlin that night)
Head Honcho Posted 23 July 2006 Posted 23 July 2006 I've got a piece! Never been to Berlin but have read some excellent articles which suggest it is now one of the most vibrant and interesting cities in Europe to visit. Hope you enjoy it. Same here. You'll find most of the best bars are all in Time Out Berlin, it's worth buying. Mitte is good at night loads of clubs and pubs. Go on a river cruise and for views go up the tower on Alexanderplatz. For food go to KaDeWe. It's a huge department store with the top two floors devoted to food just grab a seat at any of the stalls and eat. If it's hot beware of nude sunbathing in the Tiergarten in fact anywhere it seems that as soon as the temperature hits 70 degrees all Berliners strip off!
