I typed "to" into Google (on the way to typing "top gear") and it came up with:

to kill a mockingbird

????

Now, that is a bit of a long shot, isn't it?

Can anyone explain that?

Or is this just Ajax gone amock?

Probably because it's the title of a very famous book wriiten by Harper Lee and a film starring Gregory Peck who defends a young black kid in a racist community in the American South from what I can remember .

No doubt but... I had not finished typing my first word...

and the book had nothing to do with top gear!

The search term suggestion seems to come up too quickly while you are still typing.

I really hate this feature of google. I wish it could be switched on only if/when needed.

I think you or someone else must have searched for it before? I don't think there's a facility where it tries to guess what you're trying to put in unless you've searched for it before on that computer?

This happens whatever I search for.

And yes, it does try to guess (this is a google technology): it "suggests" search terms based on what you have typed so far... How it determines what to suggest, I am not too sure but I guess they keep track of all the queries performed through their search engine and can give you stats for all of them. (Let's just hope they don't have our bank account details as well )
