cisono Posted 9 September 2006 Posted 9 September 2006 ' date='Sep 9 2006, 10:42 AM' post='392866']Sometimes avoiding certain places can make it cheaper. Fr'instance if I go from Leamington Spa (my student house) to Narborough (my parents have a house there) it costs about £13 for a single, but if I get the train from Coventry to Narborough then it costs about £4 for a single because I avoid Birmingham. It used to be cheaper to go to Stansted direct (Central line) than going via London, but it is not cheap at all anymore The Trainline That's good for ordering tickets because sometimes there's random ypes of tickets which are really cheap which you probably wouldn't find otherwise. Fr'instance I can get from Lincoln down to Potters Bar just north of London for a tenner, which is nice. Bloody trainline did not allow me to buy a cheap return ticket, hence I ended up paying a lot for my ticket at the station. Also, whatever you do, do not count on their customer services to help, they are absolutely rubbish!
Floating Fox Posted 9 September 2006 Posted 9 September 2006 I went to Newquay with some friends this summer. It cost me £112 return, so stop moaning. Seriously, if you got tickets way in advance, or after 9 AM then it'd be cheaper. The train companies can charge what they like before 9 AM because they know the train will be full of people going to work. Obviously if you went to Sunderland on the train you'd have to go before 9 or you'd miss kick off. Are you mad? You paid 112 quid
Floating Fox Posted 9 September 2006 Posted 9 September 2006 Trains work on the same pricing system as people like EasyJet or bmi. They'll offer very, very cheap tickets but only a few, then the price band will increase slightly for a few tickets and so on. Your best bet is to avoid standardised ticket packages and to go into the ticket office (or, in a bigger station, the Travel Center) a week / ten days in advance and ask what the cheapest you can get to / from your destination is. If you're willing to specify times, go off peak (hard at the weekend, I know) and structure your day around cutting costs then you should be able to do alright. Alternatively, National Express is much, much, much cheaper if you don't mind long journeys. I've gotten returns between Leicester and London for about £11 before now with a bit of pre-panning. Or just use www.thetrainline.com
cisono Posted 9 September 2006 Posted 9 September 2006 Or just use The Trainline Site As I explained earlier, it doesn't always work!!! Had problems with the Trainline website recently (and yes, I know how to use it, I have been using the site for years).
LCFC-IAN Posted 9 September 2006 Posted 9 September 2006 had problems at birmingham with trains today i got an adult ticket and some guy at birmingham station said he wasnt happy with it and threatend to fine me and take me to court. in the end i just got a formal warning from central trains
Finnegan Posted 9 September 2006 Posted 9 September 2006 Trainline is your worst bet, you muppet. It's all standardised pricing, it's a computer, it doesn't know anything other than what's it's programmed to do - rip you off! Go and speak to someone in the ticket off / travel center and you'll get much more sense. Promise.

cisono Posted 9 September 2006 Posted 9 September 2006 Go and speak to someone in the ticket off / travel center and you'll get much more sense. Promise. True... but watch out for ticket office employees giving out WRONG train times!!!

I generally don't travel that far by trains so it's never too much of a problem. The only time I can think of off the top of my head is the trip from Lincoln to London which only cost a tenner using the trainline, which I thought was ok since a since it cost over twice the price for a normal single. But I'll try the whole chatting to the ticket office, I trust the Welshman (the Welshman sounds much more dramatic than Rich )
LCFC-IAN Posted 10 September 2006 Posted 10 September 2006 Why was an adult ticket not ok? i dunno he never really said he just said 'i dont like the look of this ticket'

cisono Posted 10 September 2006 Posted 10 September 2006 i dunno he never really said he just said 'i dont like the look of this ticket' Did it look tatty or like a fake? Moreover, what kind of adult ticket was it? An over 18 certification?

Sounds like he should be taken to court instead.
