cisono Posted 8 September 2006 Posted 8 September 2006 Why are they so damn expensive!!!!???? AAARRRRGGGHHHH!!! They charged me over £32 for a single from Stansted to Leicester? I went back twice to check whether they had made a mistake. No such luck, of course!
billabob Posted 8 September 2006 Posted 8 September 2006 Why are they so damn expensive!!!!???? AAARRRRGGGHHHH!!! Because it costs a lot of money in fines when the trains are late and as thats always the cost rises!
Wils Posted 8 September 2006 Posted 8 September 2006 Tell me about it. Im paying £19 quid every home game from Ipswich, and £28 if i stay over night. Complete joke, plus away games normally cost more
cisono Posted 8 September 2006 Posted 8 September 2006 Plus the ticket lady gave me the wrong time (twice!), hence I missed my second train as well!

Ultra Posted 8 September 2006 Posted 8 September 2006 Either Sheffield and Newcastle or Peterborough and Newcastle. And I'm not sure you can travel back the same day!
cisono Posted 9 September 2006 Posted 9 September 2006 Either Sheffield and Newcastle or Peterborough and Newcastle. And I'm not sure you can travel back the same day! classic
davieG Posted 9 September 2006 Posted 9 September 2006 Either Sheffield and Newcastle or Peterborough and Newcastle. And I'm not sure you can travel back the same day! Technology and free enterprise have brought massive improvements to public transport since the 50's
andrewsnaith Posted 9 September 2006 Posted 9 September 2006 they have to absorb the costs from all the skanky gits nationwide who risk using them without paying. I bet only about 20% who do that in the midlands get caught.

golden gordon Posted 9 September 2006 Posted 9 September 2006 True, but there would be less skanky gits if the prices were reasonably. tell the conductor that your face is your ticket...........he may still want to punch it though
Floating Fox Posted 9 September 2006 Posted 9 September 2006 If you buy in advance then its genraly much cheaper. But if your buying on the day its a jip Just hide in the toilet
Wils Posted 9 September 2006 Posted 9 September 2006 If you buy in advance then its genraly much cheaper. But if your buying on the day its a jip Just hide in the toilet I often buy my tickets in advance i dont think they ever come cheaper..... But how far in advance are we talking.
Floating Fox Posted 9 September 2006 Posted 9 September 2006 I often buy my tickets in advance i dont think they ever come cheaper..... But how far in advance are we talking. A month maybe? IF you want tickets to London/Luton there a lot cheaper by booking early (up to 15 quid cheaper for me) also the time of travelling matters as well.
Alexikokopops Posted 9 September 2006 Posted 9 September 2006 Sometimes avoiding certain places can make it cheaper. Fr'instance if I go from Leamington Spa (my student house) to Narborough (my parents have a house there) it costs about £13 for a single, but if I get the train from Coventry to Narborough then it costs about £4 for a single because I avoid Birmingham. http://www.thetrainline.com That's good for ordering tickets because sometimes there's random ypes of tickets which are really cheap which you probably wouldn't find otherwise. Fr'instance I can get from Lincoln down to Potters Bar just north of London for a tenner, which is nice.

When i come to Leicester i change at Ely as its about four or five pound cheaper than changing at Peterborough.Does make a difference saving that fiver on every journey just for the sake of changing somewhere else. Also when booking tickets if you just ask for tickets from one station to the other they give you the most expensive route, you need to ask for cheap day tickets etc and its alot cheaper.
Finnegan Posted 9 September 2006 Posted 9 September 2006 Trains work on the same pricing system as people like EasyJet or bmi. They'll offer very, very cheap tickets but only a few, then the price band will increase slightly for a few tickets and so on. Your best bet is to avoid standardised ticket packages and to go into the ticket office (or, in a bigger station, the Travel Center) a week / ten days in advance and ask what the cheapest you can get to / from your destination is. If you're willing to specify times, go off peak (hard at the weekend, I know) and structure your day around cutting costs then you should be able to do alright. Alternatively, National Express is much, much, much cheaper if you don't mind long journeys. I've gotten returns between Leicester and London for about £11 before now with a bit of pre-panning.
C-man Posted 9 September 2006 Posted 9 September 2006 Why are they so damn expensive!!!!???? AAARRRRGGGHHHH!!! I went to Newquay with some friends this summer. It cost me £112 return, so stop moaning. Seriously, if you got tickets way in advance, or after 9 AM then it'd be cheaper. The train companies can charge what they like before 9 AM because they know the train will be full of people going to work. Obviously if you went to Sunderland on the train you'd have to go before 9 or you'd miss kick off.
