Craig Posted 8 December 2004 Posted 8 December 2004 Redknapp poised for Saints switchSouthampton are lining up former Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp Redknapp has the fire-fighting qualities Saints need Harry Redknapp is set for a dramatic return to management with Southampton - two weeks after quitting Portsmouth. Redknapp will take over from embattled head coach Steve Wigley, who has won just one of 14 league games in charge. Pompey coach Kevin Bond is poised to accompany Redknapp, who will be Saints' third boss of the season. The move is sure to upset Portsmouth, with Pompey director Terry Brady warning Redknapp he would be committing the "highest betrayal possible." Redknapp became a cult hero after leading Portsmouth into the Premiership for the first time, and then masterminding their survival in their debut season. But he left the club claiming he needed a break from football, though many believed he was upset with chairman Milan Mandaric's decision to bring in Velimir Zajec as executive director. Redknapp, at a charity function in Southampton on Tuesday, refused to rule out a move along the south coast. He said: "Who knows, we'll wait and see. I'm not manager of Portsmouth any more and I wish them every success for the future. "But I'm a football man and I'll have to wait and see what comes up. "If something comes up that I like and it suits me, then I'll look at it. "I must admit I sat at home on Saturday watching the scores come in and I didn't really enjoy it. "I really need to be involved sooner rather than later - it is part of my life." Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe was desperate to give former Academy director Wigley, who replaced Paul Sturrock just two games into the season, every chance to succeed at St Mary's. The Saints chairman lobbied hard to win a dispensation from Premiership chairmen to allow Wigley to take charge, even though he did not possess the necessary coaching certificate. Redknapp quits as Portsmouth boss But results under Wigley have been poor and Southampton are deep in trouble near the foot of the table. If Redknapp's appointment is confirmed, he would be Saints' ninth manager in eight years. But Portsmouth director Brady claims such a move would cast doubt on Redknapp's integrity. "The board would feel let down," said Brady. "It would give the impression he has been in negotiations for some time and has used the appointment of Velimir Zajec as an excuse to leave the club. "I've tried to get hold of the chairman, but he is in Belgrade and is unavailable. But if this were true he would be devastated." :w00t: B)
Guest Posted 8 December 2004 Posted 8 December 2004 It's all working out nicely....Adams for Forest? Hehehehe
Jonesy_rules Posted 8 December 2004 Posted 8 December 2004 as a Leicester fan, i've got an unbias view on this matter! I understand with great repect that Southampton and Pompey are fierce rivals! However, the problem seems to be with the Pompey fans that Jim and Harry have done the unthinkable (which they have), and that they are being Judas, all managers are, need i remind people of the Mcgee and Wolves, or Little and Villa!!!!! These are two managers that walked out on us, whereas Harry was sacked by Pompey, and therefore in my opinion has every right to go to any club, in which he feels he can do the best with, and have the best prospects for him! Jim has gone, due to being good friends with Harry!!!! If the fans really loved Harry and Jim as much as they said / say they do, suerely they'll wish him some luck, but concentrate on getting Pompey above the Saints! It's not fair in love and war! Scow Posted 8 December 2004 Posted 8 December 2004 I think it's a good appointment for Southampton - Pompey only have themselves to blame over the whole situation. Redknapp didn't need or want a director of football, so Mandaric pushed him out. I think Southampton will stay up now, I would have said otherwise if Wigley was kept on.
Wellman Posted 8 December 2004 Posted 8 December 2004 Milan pushed Harry out it's so obvious!!! The Pompey fans down here I know aren't slagging off Harry, he did get them from a poor Div 1 to a Mid Premiership after all. Southampton fans I know are over the moon with the decision and so they should be! I can see Saints getting out of there troubles now.
