Thracian Posted 1 October 2006 Posted 1 October 2006 Having been made redundant from my previous job along with 4 others all of us just turned 50 and then spending two years applying for jobs and only getting responses when I eventually left my age off the CV and having now been 'persuaded' to leave my current job, coincidently agreed just this last month I have a feeling there might be something in this age discrimination thing. That's two of us DavieG - but I somehow think that might be the lot!!!
Rincewind Posted 1 October 2006 Posted 1 October 2006 I was lucky (or unlucky as I feel sometimes) when I was made redundant at plus 50. Because I had been at the place over 30 years and had had no recorded run ins with the law I was able to get a job as a security officer. The thing that held me back for other jobs was that I had no qualifications to speak of. Even though I am a willing and hard worker I would have been overlooked for someone just out of uni or college because they did an exam or two. I'm not talking about the high tec jobs which I agree need degrees As the bosses get younger they would rather have a younger workforce. An older boss may prefer the older person who is a good timekeeper and don't take days off because of a hangover or go to watch a football match. I remember when I was in my early twenties and I was still being used as a runabout. I went to a place for a job and was told that they were looking for somebody younger. It was then I realised my caree may not be going anywhere. I eventually 'moved up' within the company but even that was a dead end job. I stuck it for all those years though.
