Daggers Posted 29 September 2006 Posted 29 September 2006 Oh yea! No more discrimination against moaning old gits in the workplace - UNLIMITED compensation for those that do! To think I was worried about my pension, but this piece of legislation is going to help me clean up. All I have to do now is find a retirement island to buy, a personal jet and a company that will reject me so I can take it to the cleaners.
Daggers Posted 29 September 2006 Author Posted 29 September 2006 I should also point out that, in line with the new legislation, all comments about Thracian or DavieG will be treated very seriously. So none of that "What were dinosaurs really like?" and "What did you do in the war?" stuff - no! A dim view will be taken and serious expressions will be adopted. Very serious indeed.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 29 September 2006 Posted 29 September 2006 So enough of this chit chat, what was life like in black and white, Bobby?
Daggers Posted 29 September 2006 Author Posted 29 September 2006 So enough of this chit chat, what was life like in black and white, Bobby? Funny you should say that, I was only just sayin...hey, hang on a minute...you're...you....argh! *goes off to fetch a big, big stick*
syston_fox Posted 29 September 2006 Posted 29 September 2006 This is crazy - you cannot ask for a date of birth on an application forms now and its also meant to be against the new rules to ask for 2 years previous experience or anything like that. And according to BBC news, footballers over the age of 30 can complain if they're given shorter contracts than people aged about 22.... madness!
syston_fox Posted 29 September 2006 Posted 29 September 2006 Oh and the latest thing Ive heard - people have been warned against sending Birthday cards with the age on them because the person receiving them can now sue the company!

I will quote this new law when I fill in my exam registration form (as an excuse not to fill in that part). But... seriously... why on earth are you asked for your DOB every step you take in this country!?!?!?

Rincewind Posted 29 September 2006 Posted 29 September 2006 In my job you have to have a 10 year checkable work record. Age doesn't matter even though you may come up against some fit (health not female bedability) villiany types. This is not an 'ism' but in our company a lot of foreign students are taken on. How they qualify for the 10 year rule I'm not sure. But they do the training and get the liscence so it means they are qualified to do security work even if one or two take their revising work to study. I have even been on one site which is empty and seen a mattress in one room. But with the age thing I think the idea is, if the person is eager to work for the company has potential and willing to learn the company should have a scheme availabe to train them. My brother has worked for an engineering firm for around 30 years and because of ill health he has applied for an office job in house. The thing is it's has draugtsman skill needed. During his time he has gone over plans in the office because he knows them inside out and can say if its right. In the new job he'll be a junior and the ones who he has been advising his seniors. Puts him in an awkward position. He's best qualified for the job yet the management may not like him in the job. There are some company's that doshow favourtism with age but with the new rules I am sure there will be some flexability invoved It's the most extreme cases that need to be stamped out.
Dr The Singh Posted 29 September 2006 Posted 29 September 2006 The only thing this law will outlaw, is the reason given why someone is sacked or hasn't got the job!! Instead of sorry your too old, it's sorry another candidate was better!!!

Instead of sorry your too old, it's sorry another candidate was better!!! I have to disagree, the very same arguments were trotted out when it was made illegal to discriminate based on sex or colour. There is no reason why someone's age should be a bar to their employment and yet most of the IT industry find their jobs disappear once they pack on a few years. That is the thing that is ridiculous.

Daggers Posted 29 September 2006 Author Posted 29 September 2006 i'd agree with you, except for the most physical of jobs (wrestling for example)... You're no fun Stez. Me? I want to see octogenarians kicking the crap out of each other for my Saturday lunchtime pleasure.

I knew a guy in his 80s (about 84 when I last saw him) who used to work in a wine-making family business in Italy. He would start work at 5am, attend to the vines for 10 hours, using only his legs to run up and down the hills. He had short legs and looked a bit funny (also extremely tanned), but he was unbelievably fit!

The secret is to be as keen to stay active when you're 60-plus. That's what makes golf such a great game. Four hours of fast walking in a two-ball keeps the ticker functioning although I'm not sure it beats tending the vines!

Probably why 60% of male heart attacks are during or after playing golf.

Cat Burger Posted 30 September 2006 Posted 30 September 2006 I remember seeing this on the news in a dream, I really thought it was a dream.

davieG Posted 1 October 2006 Posted 1 October 2006 Having been made redundant from my previous job along with 4 others all of us just turned 50 and then spending two years applying for jobs and only getting responses when I eventually left my age off the CV and having now been 'persuaded' to leave my current job, coincidently agreed just this last month I have a feeling there might be something in this age discrimination thing.
