Became PM in 1979 following the general election in which the 'winter of discontent' had a significent role.

Was at the forefront of the privatisation process of major utilities in the 80s - electricity, gas, telecommunications etc.

Led GB to war in the Falkland Islands in 1982 (I think).

Came under severe criticism after introducing the Poll Tax in the late 80s - which led to widespread rioting and protest.

Ousted as leader of the Conservative Party following a vote of no-confidence in 1991 - replaced by John Major.
