Stuliasz Posted 19 December 2006 Posted 19 December 2006 I'm going on a day trip to Warwick Castle tomorrow and the day involves a period of ice skating. Now I've never skated before and I was wondering if anyone could offer any advice for a first timer to ensure I'm not a danger to others (or myself) Cheers.
Guest Posted 19 December 2006 Posted 19 December 2006 The trick to skating is to push backwards, not forwards. 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock, I believe they tell you. Although those could be times to be seen at A & E.
Filbert_Ross Posted 19 December 2006 Posted 19 December 2006 im not bad at it, well i was about 8 years ago when I went Nottingham, there was once a ice rink in the playgroud at new parks school while a was there too. no advice though, dont do it like your walking perhaps.
Leonisco Posted 19 December 2006 Posted 19 December 2006 Watch out for the more experienced skaters who think they're amazing and persistently try to knock the beginners over by deliberately coming from nowhere and cutting right across you at high speeds. Wan kers.

If you see a large crack getting bigger everytime you pass it......call it a day and go home
Anish Posted 19 December 2006 Posted 19 December 2006 I was in the same position as you Sheff a few weeks ago. I went ice skating in New York (having never done it before) and it was very tough at first! As someone mentioned, lean forwards and put pressure on the front of your body. Also, stick to the barrier for the first 4-5 laps of the circuit - it'll be really hard to start with, but you'll eventually get the hang of it after 20 minutes or so.

Well, you about summed up my experience perfectly there Anish. Was a decent laugh and only fell on my arse once but it was a proper fall and it was because some kid decided to go the wrong way round and straight in my path so I couldn't turn fast enough. Was on the rail for the first 15 mins or so but eventually got the hang of it.
Wils Posted 20 December 2006 Posted 20 December 2006 Chelmsford Ice rink brings back bad memories for me. Dont mention it.

I often skate on ice, but I don't normally have ice skates on at the time...
