lookwhaticando Posted 27 December 2006 Posted 27 December 2006 Gerald Ford: tributes paid. Quite interesting how he got to power to begin with more than the stuff he did in office. Although it has to be said, pardoning Nixon was quite the talking point so early in his premiership. A bit of a record-breaker, having gained high office without a single vote being cast in his name (it's an interesting line of succession in the US - all sorts of offices are in line for the presidential palace in the event of the deaths of others). Ford is also the longest-lived former US-president - longer than Reagan and Adams (the 2nd President). R.I.P. The Unexpected President.
Lemon Harpic Posted 27 December 2006 Posted 27 December 2006 R.I.P. The Unexpected President. Supporter not only of Augusto Pinochet, but of the most brutal and repressive fascist junta Argentina has ever seen. Lovely fella. Shame he's dead.
Smudge Posted 27 December 2006 Posted 27 December 2006 I met the guy once with Bob Hope at a Republican fund raiser, seemed a perfectly nice chap. His secret service bodyguard was one of our neighbors and he thought him to be a gentleman. Kissinger was the architect of foreign policy at that time who was probably in the driving seat in that regard.

A very dangerous man no matter how personable he might have been.
